This three-way electromagnetic valve includes a valve body having a sliding hole, and control, supply and discharge ports through which the sliding hole is enabled to communicate with the back pressure chamber, the high pressure chamber and the low pressure chamber, respectively, and a valve member slidably disposed in the sliding hole and capable of sliding on receiving an electromagnetic force of an electromagnetic actuator, the valve member serving to change over alternatively from one of a first communication state that the supply port and the control port are communicated with each other and a second communication state that the control port and the discharge port are communicated with each other to the other. The supply port is opened in the sliding wall of the sliding hole in the direction perpendicular to the sliding wall, and the clearance between the sliding hole and the valve member is so set as to be made large at the position remote from the supply port but small at the position adjacent to the supply port.

The low-gear control valve is operated to engage the low-gear coupling device, when the low-gear control valve receives a pressure to be applied to the reversing device for forward run of the vehicle. The high-gear control valve may be operated to release the high-gear coupling device, when a thrust based on a pressure applied to the low-gear coupling device exceeds a predetermined value. The hydraulic control apparatus may further include a device for increasing a torque capacity of the high-gear coupling device during an engaging action thereof when a shift lever is operated to a reverse-drive position for reverse run of the vehicle.

A throttle pressure is increased as the position of an intake throttle valve arranged in an intake path is increased. A transmission-ratio pressure is decreased as the position of the intake throttle valve is increased. The transmission-ratio pressure is decreased in the region of smaller openings of the intake throttle valve more gently than in the region of larger ones. The line pressure is produced in relation to the throttle pressure and the transmission-ratio pressure.
