    摘要: Multiple video boards of the general purpose type (e.g. EGA or VGA boards) and their associated monitors are operated by a single computer of the personal computer type, without modification of the computer hardware and while the video boards reside in their usual expansion slots which are provided by connectors on the mother board of the personal computer by a system which utilizes a flexible printed circuit board containing circuits which allows the processor (CPU) of the computer to present address and data signals which operate circuitry on the flexible boards to selectively enable or inhibit the communication of control signals (on the I/O and memory read and write control lines) to the video boards thereby enabling them to generate graphical images for their associated monitors. The signals on the address control and data lines are tapped and relayed either directly or after processing to the associated video board thereby enabling multiple video boards of the same or different types to be used concurrently by appropriate programming of the computer without the need to interchange hardware to switch between displays thereby reducing the inconvenience and potential hardware damage necessarily incident to such a hardware interchange procedure.

    摘要: Electrical energy is transferred or switched by selectively holding off the coupling of a magnetic field to a secondary inductive element (a coil) through a path which contains a high temperature superconductive element (HTS) which is capable of holding off the field when in its superconductive state notwithstanding that it is a high energy magnetic field. The HTS operates to hold off the magnetic field in accordance with the flux exclusion effect. When the HTS element is driven normal by heating with a laser pulse, the flux passes through the element and couples the field to the secondary, which may be connected to a load. A primary coil of superconducting material around the secondary coil can provide superconducting magnetic energy storage. The primary field is held off by HTS elements in the flux path to opposite ends of the secondary coil. These elements may be driven normal by laser pulses to transfer the stored magnetic energy to a load. A plurality of secondary coils, each with associated HTS elements, may be selectively coupled to the load as programmed inductive elements (PIE).

    摘要: A lens in a waveguide of an integrated optical circuit is achromatized (corrected for chromatic dispersion which varies the focal length of the lens with wavelength) by forming the lens as a hybrid mode-index/diffractive doublet. The chromatic dispersion of the diffractive element cancels the dispersion of the refractive element (the mode-index lens) such that the derivative of the focal length goes to zero at the design wavelength, and significantly reduces chromatic dispersion over a substantial wavelength range. For example, a 10 mm focal length, F/5 hybrid mode-index/diffractive lens may be provided with a useable wavelength range of approximately 80 mm for typical waveguide materials.

    摘要: In an SSD (smoothing by spectral dispersion) system which reduces the time-averaged spatial variations in intensity of the laser light to provide uniform illumination of a laser fusion target, an electro-optic phase modulator through which a laser beam passes produces a broadband output beam by imposing a frequency modulated bandwidth on the laser beam. A grating provides spatial and angular spectral dispersion of the beam. Due to the phase modulation, the frequencies ("colors") cycle across the beam. The dispersed beam may be amplified and frequency converted (e.g., tripled) in a plurality of beam lines. A distributed phase plate (DPP) in each line is irradiated by the spectrally dispersed beam and the beam is focused on the target where a smooth (uniform intensity) pattern is produced. The color cycling enhances smoothing and the use of a frequency modulated laser pulse prevents the formation of high intensity spikes which could damage the laser medium in the power amplifiers.

    摘要: The invention involves a method for making uniformly sized particles from solid compounds. First, a suitable solid compound is dissolved in a suitable solvent. Then, a precipitating liquid is infused, precipitating non-aggregated particles with substantially uniform mean diameter. The particles are then separated from the solvent. Depending on the solid compound and the desired particle size, the parameters of temperature, ratio of non-solvent to solvent, infusion rate, stir rate, and volume can be varied according to the invention. The precipitating liquid may be aqueous or non-aqueous, depending upon the relative solubility of the compound and the desired suspending vehicle.
