摘要: A method for sealing a rim-like opening in a glass container is described. The surface of the opening is treated with tin and/or titanium oxide precursors and with or without one or more of the groups consisting of fluorides, sulfur oxides and sulfur oxide precursors and then overcoated with a chromium III organic metallic complex. A membrane comprising a thermoplastic film is pressed onto the coated opening surface and heated to cause glass-plastic adhesion, forming a closure. The coating steps may be applied to glass containers immediately after forming and annealing as appropriate, or may be applied to glass containers taken from storage.

摘要: A method for preparing a glass container, and for sealing a glass mouth of a container and the seal is described. The sealing surface of the container is prepared by treatment with fluorine and a metal oxide, or a sulfur oxide and a metal oxide, or fluorine alone or a sulfur oxide alone, at an elevated temperature, in the case of fluorine employing a fluoride compound which decomposes at the temperature and, in the case of a metal oxide employing a metal oxide precursor. To form the closure, a membrane comprising a thermoplastic film is pressed over the sealing surface and heated to result in glass-plastic adhesion. The membrane may be a thermoplastic polymer/aluminum foil laminate.

摘要: A powder is applied to a glass ribbon as the ribbon is displaced between an annealing lehr and a cutting station. The powder on the ribbon facilitates removal of glass chips (1) generated during the cutting of the ribbon into sheets and (2) projected onto the top surface of the glass ribbon. The powder is applied by vaporizing same in a chamber and condensing the vaporized powder on or allowing the powder to condense in the chamber and fall on the top surface of the ribbon as it is displaced past the chamber.

摘要: A strippable covering for protecting marine structures from fouling in contact with water which comprises a sheet-like water-insoluble base prepared from a synthetic, thermoplastic polymeric material selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene, said base ranging in thickness from 4 to 8 mils and coated on one side thereof with a water insoluble, acrylic adhesive material comprising homopolymers and copolymers of acrylic acid and acid esters, said adhesive material ranging in thickness from about 0.5 to 2 mils, said base coated on the opposite side thereof with an anti-foulant film-forming composition comprising a film-forming ingredient consisting of polyvinyl chloride and wood rosin present in the amount of 11-17% by weight, a pigment component comprising an anti-foulant including cuprous oxide, iron oxide, tin fluoride, and possibly other organo-metallic anti-foulant materials, said pigment further comprising as an anti-foulant ingredient an aromatic bituminous material of a resinous nature such as coal tar or the like, said pigment component present in an amount of about 52% by weight, a diluent or solvent selected from the group consisting of aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones and mixtures thereof, said solvent present in an amount of about 32% by weight and a plasticizer present in an amount of about 2% by weight, said plasticizer selected from the group consisting of tricresyl-phosphate, alkylphthalates, triphenyl phosphate and mixtures thereof. The covering of the present invention provides effective protection against corrosion and attack by marine organisms yet is easily removable at the end of a season before replacement with a like covering material without the need for costly and time-consuming scraping procedures.

摘要: An article includes a carrier including a carrier bonding surface, a sheet including a sheet bonding surface, and a surface modification layer disposed on at least one of the carrier bonding surface and the sheet bonding surface. The surface modification layer includes a plasma polymerized material. The plasma polymerized material planarizes the at least one of the carrier bonding surface and the sheet bonding surface. The carrier bonding surface and the sheet bonding surface are bonded with the surface modification layer so that the carrier is temporarily bonded with the sheet. A method of making an article includes depositing a surface modification layer on at least one of a carrier bonding surface and a sheet bonding surface. The method further includes bonding the carrier bonding surface and the sheet bonding surface with the surface modification layer to temporarily bond the carrier with the sheet.

摘要: Apparatus and methods for processing a glass sheet can include a coating chamber including a dispensing port to dispense a coating on a major surface of the glass sheet. In some embodiments, an apparatus can include a fog chamber including an enclosure, a fog generator to provide fog to the enclosure, and a passage in the enclosure from which fog can exit the enclosure to contact a major surface of the glass sheet. In some embodiments a method can include providing a glass sheet to a coating chamber, and dispensing a coating on a major surface of the glass sheet. In some embodiments, a method can include providing a glass sheet to a fog chamber, providing fog to an enclosure of the fog chamber, and contacting a major surface of the glass sheet with the fog by passing the fog from the enclosure through a passage in the enclosure.

摘要: The invention relates to a glass substrate for chemical strengthening where a surface is coated by magnetron sputtering with a temporary thin film that reduces the extent of ion exchange upon chemical strengthening and where the temporary thin film can be removed after the chemical strengthening by treatment with an etchant solution. Other embodiments relate to a method for making a chemically strengthened glass substrate with controlled curvature comprising: providing a substrate with opposed surfaces that are durable to a given etchant solution, forming a temporary thin film upon at least part of a surface of the glass substrate, chemically strengthening the glass substrate bearing the temporary thin film, and removing the temporary thin film after said chemical strengthening with said etchant solution. The thickness of the temporary thin film is chosen such that a controlled curvature is obtained upon chemical strengthening.
