An operation mode control system for an automatic automotive power transmission includes a manually operable mode selection switch for selecting an operation mode from among economy, power, and hold modes. When an acceleration demand magnitude is larger than a criterion value while the hold mode is selected, the execution of the hold mode is suspended. This suspension of the hold mode execution is automatically released without operating the manually operable mode selection switch when certain conditions are reached. The power mode may be executed in place of the hold mode during the suspension of the hold mode execution.

A control device for an automobile has at least one sensor for detecting an operational state of the automobile. An output from the sensor is applied to a sample and hold circuit which is adapted to provide a time displaced output to a hierarchical group of neural elements. The neural elements operate upon said time displaced signals by varying the weighting of the signals and/or threshold values of the neural elements in accordance with a desired output parameter. The output of the neural computer is applied to a control circuit which is adapted to control an automobile actuator. The hierarchical group of neural elements are provided with numerous forms of different learning functions so that the desired output parameter is achieved. In one such embodiment desired parameters are applied to said neural computer and to a comparator, signals derived from sensors associated with automobile actuators are also applied to said comparator whereby difference signals are outputted from said comparator to control the weighting and/or threshold levels of the neural elements. The invention may be applied to different functions such as controlling air/fuel ratio, ignition timing, knock control, sensing, suspension adjustment, and road surface detection.

In addition to the position of an accelerator pedal (25) serving as the power control member, its movements as well as the movements of the brake pedal (16) are monitored by a computer (10) and predetermined motion sequences are selectively picked up as direct gear selection control instructions from the driver in order to possibly initiate gear changing processes after the premissibility of the new gear has been determined. Automatic upshifting processes are suppressed when the accelerator pedal is released as long as the number of engine revolutions remains below a predetermined engine specific maximum number of revolutions. On the other hand, movements of the accelerator pedal (25) are directly influenced by the computer (10).

An engine speed is controlled so that the engine speed may not exceed a predetermined rotational speed when the transmission gear ratio is fixed. A target engine speed or target transmission ratio is corrected in response to an output signal of a comparison device which compares an actual vehicle velocity with a set vehicle velocity during automatic fixed vehicle velocity running.
