摘要: A method and system to assist in a planning and navigation of procedure. Generally, the system allows for image acquisition of a selected area of the anatomy. The images may then be used to mark various points to determine true anatomical definitions and planes. The definitions may assist in positioning a prosthesis.

摘要: Generally, the present invention is directed to a method and system for a aligning surgical guide instrument over a burr hole in a patient's body. More particularly, the present invention is directed to a stand-alone instrument guidance unit that is attachable to a patient's skull. Adjustments of a surgical instrument can be made in x, y, z, and angular directions using the system and method of the present invention. In one aspect of the present invention, an instrument guide unit includes an instrument guide for guiding a surgical instrument into the body of a patient and a base unit operative to be secured to the body in an area in which surgery is to occur. The base unit is coupled to the instrument guide. An adjustment mechanism, coupled to the base unit and the instrument guide, is operative to adjust the instrument guide in lateral directions with respect the surface of the area. The adjustment mechanism is operative to adjust the instrument guide in x and y directions. The adjustment mechanism includes an x direction control mechanism for adjusting the instrument in an x direction and a y direction control mechanism for adjusting the instrument in a y direction. The y direction control mechanism may be coupled to the x direction control mechanism. The positional movement of the surgical instrument in the z direction may be tracked by sensing the location of a transducer coupled to the surgical instrument.

摘要: A brain lead anchoring system is described which allows for installation of a brain stimulation lead or a drug delivery catheter without the lead or catheter ever being unsupported during installation so that the lead or catheter does not move during the anchoring procedure. An anchor assembly contains an anchoring mechanism that is biased in the closed or anchoring position and is only open to allow installation of a lead when it is mated to an introducer instrument, which has prongs that open the anchoring mechanism. Once the lead is appropriately positioned within the brain and while the lead is still supported by the installation guiding device, the introducer instrument is withdrawn from the anchoring mechanism, which thus allows the anchoring mechanism to return to its closed position. A locking cap covers the aperture through the anchor assembly into the skull and mechanically ensures that the anchoring mechanism remains in the closed position. The anchor assembly also has channels in its top surface within which the lead may be inserted so that the lead may be lain flat on the surface of the patient's skull.

摘要: An apparatus and procedures for percutaneous placement of surgical implants and instruments such as, for example, screws, rods, wires and plates into various body parts using image guided surgery. The invention includes an apparatus for use with a surgical navigation system, an attaching device rigidly connected to a body part, such as the spinous process of a vertebrae, with an identification superstructure rigidly but removably connected to the attaching device. This identification superstructure, for example, is a reference arc and fiducial array which accomplishes the function of identifying the location of the superstructure, and, therefore, the body part to which it is fixed, during imaging by CAT scan or MRI, and later during medical procedures.

摘要: A scope assembly for an endoscope adapted for use with a portal cannula to provide a generally hemispherically shaped field of view within the body. The scope assembly includes a guiding cannula adapted for rotation within the portal cannula. A distal end of the guiding cannula is bent or offset from a longitudinal axis of the scope assembly. A bendable scope is mounted within the guiding cannula and is adapted for rotation within the guiding cannula. A GRIN lens located at a distal or viewing end of the bendable scope is also offset from the longitudinal axis of the bendable scope such that upon rotation of the guiding cannula or bendable scope a generally hemispherically shaped field of view is scanned.

摘要: The present invention provides a light box for fiber optic illumination cables. The light box includes a light bulb mounted in a disposable bulb holder. The light from the bulb enters a light preparation train including an aperture to produce an initial light beam, a hot mirror to reflect infrared and ultraviolet light, and an optical taper to narrow the light beam to the input diameter of the fiber optic illumination cable. The resulting light beam is passed to the illumination cable via a connector which selectively retains the fiber optic cable. The connector allows the cable to rotate while retained in the connector and includes a receiving tube surrounded by a sliding tube. A void between the tubes contains a plurality of ball retainers which can selectively extend through the wall of the receiving tube to retain the fiber optic cable. Because the connector is spring loaded, the cable is securely retained unless the sliding tube is manually moved into the releasing position by the operator. The light box further includes an electrical connector providing a safety circuit interrupting the power line to the light box when the drawer is removed, as well as a single use hour meter resetting circuit.
