The present invention relates to a high-pressure pump for a fuel injection device of an internal combustion engine, with a pump housing, with at least one work chamber disposed in the pump housing functionally between an inlet region and a supply region. A working element is movably disposed in the work chamber, and a pump shaft is provided in the pump housing by means of which the working element can be driven. In order to obtain a shortened structural length, and an extended service life of the pump, a provision is made that the pump housing can be fastened to a wall of a motor housing of the internal combustion engine, wherein the pump shaft can be radially supported against a shaft of the internal combustion engine, which shaft is supported in the motor housing.

The temperature of a measuring resistor is controlled for measuring the mass flow rate of intake air entering an internal combustion engine. The operating temperature of the measuring resistor is regulated by controlling the level of electric current flowing therethrough. A voltage signal based on the level of electric current flowing through the measuring resistor is generated which is indicative of the mass flow rate of air entering the engine. The operating temperature of the measuring resistor is adjusted based on the value of the voltage signal, to optimize the measurement sensitivity thereof based on the level of the intake air mass flow rate.

A fuel injection system is proposed which serves to provide the most precise possible adaptation of the fuel-air mixture to operating conditions of the internal combustion engine. The fuel injection system includes metering valves, each of which is assigned one regulating valve, whose movable valve element can be exposed on the one hand to the fuel pressure downstream of the respective metering valve and on the other hand to the pressure in a control pressure line, which is limited on the one hand by an electro-fluid converter of the nozzle/bounce plate type and on the other hand by a control throttle. The electro-fluid converter is triggerable in accordance with operating characteristics of the engine. A pressure limitation valve is embodied as a diaphragm valve and serves to regulate the most precise possible system pressure in the engine and, when the engine is shut off, it serves to reduce the fuel pressure in the fuel injection system below the fuel pressure required for opening the injection valves and to block the return flow lines.

Simultaneously with the opening of the electromagnetic valve, the electrical circuit of the starter motor is closed, so that after the preceding filling with fuel of all the lines and assemblies of the fuel injection system with fuel, a more certain start of the engine is assured.

A piston pump for pumping fuel in which a risk of fuel getting into the area of a shaft seal is limited. The fuel pump includes a separation chamber which is provided between a shaft seal and a fuel chamber that contains fuel. Located in the separation chamber is for instance air as a separator means, and the separation chamber communicates with an air inlet of the engine. This assures that fuel cannot get into the area of the shaft seal or escape to the outside. The fuel pump is suitable in particular for internal combustion engines in which the fuel must be delivered at high pressure.
