A surface treatment for a protective plastic film and/or laminate is disclosed. Suitably, the surface treatment includes coating a major surface of the plastic film or laminate with a curable coating formulation wherein the one or more of the coating ingredients are diffused or migrated at least partially into the plastic film or plastic laminate. The migration of coating ingredients creates a gradual transition layer from the plastic film to the coating layer and leads to unique properties. Optionally, the surface treated plastic film is laminated to a release liner coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) to form the aforementioned laminate.

Acrylate copolymer pressure-sensitive adhesive constructions are described which provide excellent retention of rivet properties. Tenting around rivets is minimized even after undergoing thermal aging while in contact with additive rich films like PVC. This is achieved by the inclusion of a synergistic amount of an N-vinyl lactam monomer and acid monomer with the bulk of the monomers being an alkyl acrylate save and/or methacrylate esters. A concomitant increase in cohesive strength is also achieved which affords good removal characteristics. The use of appropriate adhesive blends is further disclosed which allows retention of these features while also improving cold temperature properties.

Acrylic emulsion PSA polymers which when cast as a film resist water whitening by hot or ambient temperature water are provided, and are formed by copolymerizing a monomer mixture comprising at least one alkyl acrylate ester of an alcohol containing at least four carbon atoms, at least one polar comonomer and at least one partially water soluble comonomer present in an amount of at least about 7% by weight of the monomers. Polymerization is carried out in the presence of at least one nonionic surfactant containing at least about 8 moles of ethylene oxide per mole nonionic surfactant and at least one anionic surfactant containing up to about 10 moles ethylene oxide per mole anionic surfactant. There is added to the product of polymerization at least one base to produce an emulsion having a pH greater than 7 and containing particles having a mean nullvolume-averagenull particle diameter of up to about 210 nm as determined by laser light scattering. An electrolyte is post-polymerization added to stabilize opacity of the adhesive films cast from the emulsion. Applications include autoclavable labels, wet-stick container labels, fleet marking labels and battery labels.

A pressure sensitive adhesive tape comprises a carrier layer having a thickness of 0.25 to 2.0 millimeter and comprising an electron beam cured pressure sensitive adhesive matrix, 10 to 20% by volume low density microspheres and at least one pigment in an amount sufficient to color the tape. Preferably, fumed silica is present in an amount up to 5% by weight. The tape preferably has a kin layer on each side of the carrier layer. The skin layer has a coating thickness of 25 to 125 g/m.sup.2 and comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive matrix free of rigid, low density microspheres. The process comprises first preparing an adhesive composition containing electron beam-curable adhesive polymer matrix, fillers and solvent. The composition is introduced and conveyed through a twin screw extruder. In the extruder, solvent is removed in one or more solvent removal units, and a solvent-free composition is extruded as the carried layer. Skin layers may be co-extruded with the carrier layer.

Inherently tacky infusible pressure-sensitive adhesive microspheres are prepared by polymerizing at least one monomer which when polymerized will form a pressure-sensitive adhesive having a glass transition temperature less than abotu -20.degree. C. in an organic medium in which the monomer is substantially insoluble and in the presence of a surfactant and a suspension stabilizer which are soluble in the organic medium and substantially insoluble in the monomer under conditions of shear sufficient to form suspended particles of a size less than 200 microns. A monomer soluble initiator is preferably employed. The preferred media are ethylene glycol and glycerol and the preferred monomers are 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate and methacrylic acid.
