    Abstract: A modular hip prosthesis operable to engage the cortical material in a host femur having a metaphysis and an intramedullary canal. The modular hip prosthesis includes a modular metaphyseal segment which is able to be inserted into the metaphysis of the host femur. The modular metaphyseal segment includes an axial cone portion and a cervical cone portion. The modular hip prosthesis further includes a modular diaphyseal segment which is able to be inserted into the intramedullary canal and being removably secured to the modular metaphyseal segment. Finally, the modular hip prosthesis includes a modular head which is able to engage the modular metaphyseal segment and is detached from the modular diaphyseal segment.Also disclosed is surgical instrumentation for use in implanting a medical device. The surgical instrumentation includes a template having a plurality of scaled markings disposed thereon. The surgical instrumentation also includes a plurality of surgical instruments also having scaled markings disposed thereon. The positions of the scaled markings on the surgical instruments have a correspondence with the position of the scaled markings on the template.

    Abstract: An acetabular cup prosthesis assembly has an outer shell, a bearing insert, a locking collar, and a locking ring. The bearing insert is retained within the outer shell, which has a generally smooth, hemispherical outer surface. The bearing insert is adapted to receive the femoral head of a hip prosthesis. An opening of the insert has a first diameter which is smaller than the diameter of the femoral head, and is elastically expandable to a second diameter to allow for passage of the femoral head through the opening. The locking collar is movable from a disengaged position to an engaged position adjacent the bearing insert to prevent the opening from expanding to the second diameter so as to lock the femoral head in position within the insert. The locking ring is disposed within a first circumferential groove in the inner surface of the outer shell, and serves to maintain the locking collar in position adjacent the bearing insert. The outer shell, the bearing insert, and the locking ring may be assembled into a sub-assembly which may be separately packed and sterilized for use by an orthopedic surgeon. The sub-assembly and locking collar form a two-component system which is easily manipulated during the implantation procedure.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for facilitating shoulder arthroplasty by providing a reference to establish version of the glenoid. In one form of the invention, a guide for positioning a guide pin to facilitate implantation of a glenoid prosthesis is provided. To properly position the guide pin, the guide is first oriented with respect to the scapula. A portion of the guide is positioned over the approximate center of the glenoid surface and another portion of the guide is positioned against the anterior surface of the scapula. After the guide is properly positioned, the guide pin is inserted through an aperture in the guide and anchored in the glenoid. Thereafter, the guide pin can serve as an alignment guide for other devices used to modify the glenoid surface. For example, a reamer having a cannulated central shaft can be placed over the guide pin and utilized to resurface the glenoid.

    Abstract: An apparatus for securing soft tissues, tendons and ligaments to bone using a suture strand. The apparatus includes a spear member which is able to pierce and securely engage the bone. The spear member includes an eyelet which is able to carry the suture strand at a position along the midportion of the suture strand. The suture strand is secured to the bone upon engagement between the spear member and the bone. In addition, the ends of the suture strand are accessible to the surgeon so that they may be manipulated so as to secure the soft tissue to the bone.
