The fuel injection system includes a low-pressure part that contains a fuel tank and a prefeed pump and a high-pressure part that contains a high-pressure pump and a common rail into which a fuel flow is fed from the high-pressure pump through a common conduit. The high-pressure pump system solves a problem in that there is an integrated demand-based quantity control for the fuel flow pumped by the high-pressure pump. The demand-based quantity control integrated with the high-pressure pump contributes to improving the overall engine efficiency, because the power consumption by the high-pressure pump drops as a result.

Downstream of the crank chamber f the main pump a return line is provided for the portion of the fuel which is used as lubricant to return to the tank. Also downstream of the crank chamber feed course directs fuel to a metering unit and on to the main pump. To make the pump assembly as simply as possible the prefeed pump is mechanically driven, and a zero-feed course branches off between the metering unit and the main feed pump to return fuel to the intake side of the prefeed pump. The invention relates to a high-pressure pump for fuel delivery in fuel injection systems of internal combustion engines, which includes a tank, a pre-feed pump, and the high-pressure pump. The pre-feed pump aspirates a total fuel flow from the tank and this total fuel flow is divided into a lubricating flow, which is conveyed through the high-pressure pump for the purpose of lubrication, and a delivery flow, which is acted on with high pressure by the high-pressure pump and is delivered to a common distributor rail. The fuel injection system prevents damage that could occur during operation. Damage is prevented because the total fuel flow is conveyed through the high-pressure pump for the purpose of lubrication, wherein a metering unit for the total fuel flow is provided in the high-pressure pump or in a return and assures that only a predetermined delivery flow is acted on with high pressure in the high-pressure pump. The fuel injection system according to the invention has the advantage that fewer separate parts are required. This reduces costs.

In an internal combustion engine, in particular with direct injection, a first fuel pump delivers fuel from a fuel tank to a second fuel pump. This second fuel pump delivers the fuel to a fuel accumulation line. A metering unit is triggered by a control and/or regulating unit and meters the fuel quantity traveling into the inlet of the second fuel pump. In order to simplify the design of the engine and to reduce its cost, the invention proposes that during normal operation, the metering unit is closed when it is without power and that when the control and/or regulating unit is “dead”, the metering unit is without power and the fuel delivery to the metering unit is cut off.

A method for calibrating a pressure sensor in a fuel metering system and a corresponding device, which enable the pressure sensor to be calibrated as precisely as possible. For this purpose, the instantaneous cooling-water temperature of the internal combustion engine is measured and the drop in the cooling-water temperature is derived therefrom as a measure for the standstill time of the internal combustion engine, the pressure sensor first being calibrated when the standstill time exceeds a predefinable minimum. Thus, an arrangement for monitoring the cooling-water temperature already present per se in the vehicle may be used to reliably and precisely calibrate the pressure sensor. Therefore, this is able to be realized very quickly and almost without extra expenses, in particular without using an additional timing supervision for measuring the standstill time. The method and the corresponding device are well suited for calibrating pressure sensors in the high-pressure region (rail pressure sensors) as well as for calibrating sensors in the low-pressure region (presupply pressure sensors).
