The furcation apparatus includes a furcation spacer having a plurality of passages extending through an interior of the furcation spacer from a first end to a second end. Each passage is of a size sufficient to receive a furcation tube having reinforcing fibers, and each furcation tube is of a size sufficient to receive one of the plurality of conductors of the cable. The furcation tube reinforcing fibers approach the furcation spacer from the second end and are anchored adjacent the first end, and the cable reinforcing fibers approach the furcation spacer from the first end and are anchored adjacent the second end, such that tensioning the furcation tube reinforcing fibers and cable reinforcing fibers places the furcation spacer under compressive stress.

The signal producing layer includes flux collection portions joined by magnetic switching sections each having a major axis A, and the signal blocking layer comprises signal blocking elements overlying each flux collection portion. The elements each have at least one boundary that overlies a magnetic switching section and preferably has a tangent T that is not perpendicular to the major axis A of that magnetic switching section. Methods of making the inventive marker are also disclosed.

An Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) marker is adapted for direct application to optically recorded media such as compact disks, CD-ROM's, laser disks, digital video disks, and the like. The marker includes a support sheet and one or more marker elements which are positioned such that the mass distribution of the marker is symmetrically disposed about the center of the marker. This ensures that when the marker is properly positioned on the optically recorded media, the marker does not adversely affect the mechanical balance of the media.
