The invention provides a composition which increases the impact strength and lowers the viscosity of melt processed plastics resins. In particular the invention relates to an impact modifier composition comprising at least one impact modifier and at least one mineral oil and optionally up to 50% by weight of at least one plastics resin. Methods of making such impact modifier compositions are disclosed, together with a general process for combining at least one oil with at least one impact modifier during the impact modifier manufacturing process.
Abstract:
Aqueous-form additive systems, and methods of blending the same with a matrix resin, are disclosed whereby acrylic-based impact modifier compositions, butadiene-based impact modifier compositions and acrylic-based processing aids are used in aqueous form without the need for isolation to the traditional powder-form. The aqueous additive systems of the present invention provide a means for the design of novel additive compositions. The aqueous additive systems of the present invention also provide a great degree of flexibility in preparation of matrix resin blends and formulations. Additionally, the aqueous additive systems of the present invention allow for the reduced cost of manufacturing additives and reduced cost in blending matrix resin formulations.

Compositions are disclosed that are processable into capstocks having a reduced gloss appearance, high impact strength and superior weatherability. The capstocks described herein are especially useful for extrusion into articles. They are also useful for application to various poor weathering structural plastic articles for preparing multilayered composites having improved weatherability. Methods for manufacturing structural plastic capstocks and composites and articles produced therefrom having reduced gloss appearance are also described.
Abstract:
A novel coating composition, exhibiting improved adhesion to anionic substrates and a process for its preparation and use, is disclosed. The coating contains an aqueous dispersion of a cationic polymeric binder. The polymeric binder is preferably prepared by the polymerization of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, having amine functionality, in the presence of at least one nonionic or amphoteric surfactant, followed by the subsequent neutralization of the polymer using selected acids. Coatings containing the cationic latex polymeric binder and selected cationic pigment dispersants are provided. In addition, by selecting certain process conditions and reactive pigments, completely cationic aqueous coating compositions, which maintain the advantages of a water-based system while exhibiting excellent stain blocking, corrosion resistance, water sensitivity resistance and adhesion to wood and alkyd surfaces, and which are competitive in their performance with conventional solvent based alkyd primers and paints, are disclosed.
