Abstract: An engine (10) is a cylinder injection engine, and includes an injector (21) that directly injects a fuel into a combustion chamber (23), and an ignition plug (34) that generates an ignition spark in the combustion chamber (23). An ECU (40) performs multiple first injections to each produce an air-fuel mixture of a lean air-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber (23) before an ignition in one combustion cycle of the engine, and performs a second injection to produce an air-fuel mixture of a rich air-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber (23) before the ignition and after the first injection. In particular, the ECU implements the multiple first injections in such a manner that the first injection implemented early among the multiple first injections produces an air-fuel mixture leaner than that of the first injection implemented subsequently. The ECU implements the second injection only once immediately before an ignition timing.

Abstract: An abnormality diagnosis device includes a partially-plugged filter, a pressure difference sensor, a PM sensor, a first estimation portion estimating a diagnosis amount of PM from the partially-plugged filter, according to a running condition of the internal combustion engine, a second estimation portion estimating the diagnosis amount of PM according to an output of the pressure difference sensor, a third estimation portion estimating the diagnosis amount of PM according to an output of the PM sensor, and an abnormality diagnosis portion distinctly determining an abnormality of the internal combustion engine, an abnormality of the partially-plugged filter, and an abnormality of the PM sensor by comparing the diagnosis amount of PM estimated by the first estimation portion, the diagnosis amount of PM estimated by the second estimation portion, and the diagnosis amount of PM estimated by the third estimation portion.

Abstract: An engine includes a GPF disposed in an exhaust pipe, and the GPF removes, by burning, a captured PM to regenerate a capturing function. The GPF includes a catalyst layer for facilitating GPF regeneration. An ECU determines whether the catalyst layer in the GPF is deteriorated. If the catalyst layer is deteriorated, the ECU executes deterioration recovering control of raising a temperature of the GPF to a predetermined temperature or more and of making an atmosphere of the exhaust gas supplied to the GPF lean.

Abstract: An exhaust gas filter purifies exhaust gas containing particulate matter emitted from an engine. The filter has cell walls and cells surrounded by the cell walls. Through pores formed in the cell walls, adjacent cells are communicated. The cells have open cells opening along an axial direction of the filter, and plugged cells. An upstream end part of the plugged cell is plugged by a plug member. On a cross section perpendicular to the axial direction, a flow-passage sectional area of the plugged cells is larger than a flow-passage sectional area of the open cells. A total length of the filter is not less than a first standard value and is not more than a critical length Lm determined by respective predetermined equations.

Abstract: A PM sensor is arranged downstream of a one-side blocked filter that collects a particulate matter in exhaust gas of an engine, and first and second sensor abnormality diagnoses are executed based on output of the PM sensor. In the first sensor abnormality diagnosis, a filter-outflow PM amount (an amount of the PM flowing out from the one-side blocked filter) is estimated based on a working condition of the engine and a PM collection rate of the one-side blocked filter, and an occurrence of output abnormality of the PM sensor is determined by comparing a sensor-detection PM amount (an amount of the PM detected based on the output of the PM sensor) with the filter-outflow PM amount. In the second sensor abnormality diagnosis, an engine discharging PM amount (an amount of the PM discharged from the engine) is estimated based on a working condition of the engine, and an occurrence of output abnormality of the PM sensor is determined by comparing an increasing rate of the output of the PM sensor with an increasing rate of the engine discharging PM amount.
