Abstract: A fastener cartridge assembly includes a plurality of fasteners and a layer configured to be captured by the fasteners. In addition, the layer includes a tissue contacting surface which includes a plurality of cleats, and/or any other suitable structures, configured to reduce slippage between the layer and the patient tissue. In various embodiments, the layer can include traction features extending therefrom.

Abstract: An apparatus comprises a first jaw, a second jaw, a first handle, and a second handle. The second jaw is pivotally coupled with the first jaw. The first jaw and the second jaw are configured to grasp tissue. The jaws provide offset electrode surfaces that are operable to deliver bipolar RF energy to tissue grasped between the jaws. The apparatus is further operable to sever tissue. A lockout feature selectively prevents tissue severing, based on an energization state of the jaws.

Abstract: A staple cartridge for use with a surgical stapler can comprise a cartridge deck and a plurality of staples at least partially positioned within the cartridge deck. In various embodiments, the staples can be supported by a support jaw of the surgical stapler and can comprise legs which can extend upwardly through apertures defined in the cartridge deck. In use, the cartridge deck can be pushed downwardly relative to the staples into a well defined in the support jaw.

Abstract: A layer such as, for example, a tissue thickness compensator for an end effector of a surgical instrument can comprise compressible and non-compressible portions. The tissue thickness compensator can be positioned in the end effector such as adjacent to a deck surface of a fastener cartridge that is positioned in the end effector. The tissue thickness compensator can be maintained in a compressed state and can be released from the compressed state by a cutting member of the end effector.

Abstract: A fastener cartridge can comprise a cartridge body comprising fastener cavities, fasteners at least partially stored within the cartridge body, and a layer positioned over the cartridge body. The cartridge body can include a proximal end and a distal end. Similarly, the layer can include a proximal end and a distal end. The distal end of the layer can extend distally with respect to the distal end of the cartridge body. Furthermore, the layer can include a distal portion which extends distally with respect to the fastener cavities defined in the cartridge body. This distal portion can be positioned against the tissue being fastened and can flexibly support the tissue after the layer has been implanted against the tissue. The layer may include a proximal portion which extends proximally with respect to the fastener cavities which can flexibly support the tissue after the layer has been implanted.
