Abstract: A surgical stapler including an anvil, a staple cartridge, and a buttress material removably retained to the anvil and/or staple cartridge. In various embodiments, the staple cartridge can include at least one staple removably stored therein which can, when deployed, or fired, therefrom, contact the buttress material and remove the buttress material from the anvil and/or staple cartridge. In at least one embodiment, the anvil can include at least one lip and/or groove configured to removably retain the buttress material to the anvil until deformable members extending from the surgical staple are bent by the anvil and are directed toward and contact the buttress material.

Abstract: A surgical instrument having a shaft, an end effector, a firing system, and a control system is disclosed herein. The firing member is configured to translate an electric motor through a firing stroke. The control system includes a pulse width modulation circuit configured to adjust a duty cycle of voltage pulses to drive the firing system to a target speed. The control system includes a control circuit configured to evaluate the duty cycle of pulses at a predetermined adjustment point and set the target speed based at least in part on the comparison (maintain or new speed). The controls system may be configured to set the target speed at two or more adjustment points during the firing stroke and/or evaluate the duty cycle of pulses at an adjustment point more than half way through the firing stroke.

Abstract: A detachable motor-powered surgical instrument. The instrument may include a housing that includes at least one engagement member for removably attaching the housing to an actuator arrangement. A motor is supported within the housing for supplying actuation motions to various portions of a surgical end effector coupled to the housing. The housing may include a contact arrangement that is configured to permit power to be supplied to the motor only when the housing is operably attached to the actuator arrangement.

Abstract: A surgical stapling instrument comprising a tissue cutting knife movable through a staple cartridge to perform a staple firing stroke is disclosed. The stapling instrument further comprises a lockout system configured to prevent the tissue cutting knife from being moved through the staple firing stroke if the staple cartridge is missing from the stapling instrument and/or if the staple cartridge has been previously fired. The lockout system comprises a flexible spring that acts on the bottom of the tissue cutting knife at the initiation of the staple firing stroke to push the tissue cutting knife into a lockout recess if the staple cartridge is missing or has been previously fired.

Abstract: A method for controlling a surgical instrument is disclosed. In at least one instance, the surgical instrument comprises a shroud and the operation of the surgical instrument is modified based on input from a sensing circuit configured to sense a parameter of the shroud. In certain instances, the surgical instrument comprises a strain gage circuit and the operation of the surgical instrument is modified based on input from the strain gage circuit.

Abstract: A surgical stapling instrument having a surgical end effector that includes first and second jaws that are selectively movable relative to each other. The surgical stapling instrument further includes a staple cartridge having a sled movable through said staple cartridge between an unfired position and a fired position. The sled includes a central portion configured to be received by a longitudinal slot, a first wedge-shaped cam on a first side of the central portion, and a second wedge-shaped cam on a second side of the central portion. The central portion extends distal to the first wedge-shaped cam and said second wedge-shaped cam. The surgical stapling instrument further includes a firing member configured to advance the sled from the unfired position toward the fired position during a staple firing stroke and a lockout system.

Abstract: A surgical stapler instrument includes a stapling head assembly that receives a plurality of staples. The staples are configured with features that allow the staples to expand after deployment so that an anastomosis created by the instrument can increase in size after forming. In some versions the staples expand automatically after deployment, and in other versions the staples expand in response to tissue forces imparted upon the staples after deployment. In some versions the staples are configured to be deployed in various patterns that promote expandability of the circular staple line.
