Abstract: A vehicle includes a powertrain having an electric machine, and friction brakes configured to resist rotation of a vehicle wheel. The further includes at least one controller programmed to (i) issue a command for the electric machine to apply a regenerative torque to decelerate the vehicle in response to driver braking demand, and (ii) cause both a decay in the regenerative torque and a countervailing increase in the resistance of the friction brakes when vehicle speed is reduced to less than a first threshold such that braking demand is substantially satisfied by only the friction brakes when the vehicle speed is less than a second threshold.

The electric machine may be configured to generate creep torque to move the vehicle. The controller may be programmed to decrease a target speed of a torque converter impeller to create a desired brake torque and partially cancel the creep torque without application of friction brakes in response to a brake pedal being pressed while an accelerator pedal is not being pressed.

Abstract: A hybrid vehicle includes an engine and an electric machine selectively coupled to one another via a clutch. In one mode of operation, the vehicle can be propelled by only the electric machine while the engine is off. When additional torque is required from the engine, at least one controller transmits an engine start request. In order to start the engine, the clutch can be prestroked such that it fills with pressure prior to the engine to start the engine. While the vehicle is on, at least one controller is programmed to prestroke the clutch prior to the engine start request based at least upon the electric machine and the engine generating substantially zero torque. This increases the overall engine start time.

Abstract: A hybrid electric vehicle or a battery electric vehicle has an electric machine, a traction battery, and an accessory powered by the traction battery. The vehicle includes a controller that, in response to a driver lifting their foot off the accelerator pedal, increases the negative motor torque produced by the electric machine for charging the traction battery to compensate for a load applied by the accessory. The controller increases negative motor torque as limited by a maximum motor torque limit. The accessory may be an electric air conditioning compressor and/or a DC/DC inverter.

Abstract: A vehicle includes an engine and an electric machine coupled to a transmission element. The electric machine is also selectively coupled with the engine by a clutch. The vehicle includes a belt integrated starter-generator (BISG) operatively coupled to the engine. An electronic controller includes one or more inputs adapted to receive a temperature measurement and a request to start the engine. The electronic controller is programmed to energize the BISG and the electric machine in response to receiving an engine start request and a temperature measurement being less than a threshold temperature measurement. The electronic controller is further programmed to close the disconnect clutch to apply torque from the electric machine to the engine in response to the electric machine achieving a threshold electric machine speed.

Abstract: A vehicle includes a hybrid powertrain. The hybrid powertrain includes an engine and an electric machine. In response to a loss of controllability of the electric machine, a controller is programmed to operate the powertrain in a limited operating mode. In the limited operating mode, the powertrain is controlled so that a speed of the engine is within a speed range such that the electric machine generates a current to charge a traction battery. In response to a loss of communication with a power inverter that controls the electric machine, the powertrain is controlled so that the speed of the engine is within the speed range and the current flowing to the traction battery is monitored. If the current flow is above a threshold, then the limited operating mode is entered.
