Abstract: A multi-processor architecture for automated driving systems can be used to improve performance and provide design flexibility. For example, a multi-processor architecture can be used to implement command generation and safety functionality in different processors. The command generation processor can be a high performing processor compared with the safety processor. The safety processor can verify the safety of commands output from the command generation processor and provide additional I/O channels that are typically absent on high performing processors. Additionally, processing of some sensor data can be moved to expansion modules with additional processors to reduce bottlenecks and provide design flexibility for systems with different sensing requirements.

Abstract: A system that performs a method is disclosed. At a first time, characteristics about an area surrounding a vehicle are determined using a first sensing grid including first sensing cells of a first size. At a second time, after the first time, whether sensing cell size data satisfies sensing cell size change criteria is determined. In response to the determination: in accordance with a determination that the sensing cell size data satisfies the sensing cell size change criteria, characteristics about the area surrounding the vehicle are determined using a second sensing grid including second sensing cells of a second size, different from the first size. In accordance with a determination that the sensing cell size data does not satisfy the sensing cell size change criteria, characteristics about the area surrounding the vehicle are determined using the first sensing grid including the first sensing cells of the first size.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to a method of safely and automatically navigating in the presence of emergency vehicles. A first vehicle may receive, via communication hardware, a message indicating presence of the emergency vehicle. Such a message may originate from the emergency vehicle itself and/or from infrastructure such as a smart traffic light that can sense the presence of the emergency vehicle. The first vehicle may then determine the relative location of the emergency vehicle and automatically respond appropriately by determining a safe trajectory and navigating according to that trajectory until the emergency vehicle is out of range. In some examples, the first vehicle may detect the presence of an emergency vehicle using on-board sensors such as distance measuring sensors, depth sensors, and cameras, in addition to receiving a message via communication hardware.

Abstract: A system for operating a vehicle is disclosed. The vehicle is operated in a first driving state corresponding to a first set of logic for operating the vehicle, the first set of logic including logic for performing a first action at the vehicle in response to a determination that a first condition exists in the surroundings of the vehicle. That state change criteria for transitioning from the first driving state to a second driving state are satisfied is determined. In response to the determination, the vehicle is operated in the second driving state corresponding to a second set of logic, different from the first set of logic, for operating the vehicle, the second set of logic including logic for performing a second action, different from the first action, at the vehicle in response to a determination that the first condition exists in the surroundings of the vehicle.

Abstract: Examples of the present invention are directed to a method and system of recognizing a driving pattern of a vehicle. Driver input controlling the vehicle can be received and stored in association with various sensor information (e.g., GPS location, camera data, radar data, etc.) and a timestamp. Then, driving patterns can be recognized from the stored information. For example, preferred routes, destinations, driving speeds, driving styles, etc. can be recognized. The driving patterns can be used by automated driving or driving assistance systems to automatically drive on preferred routes or to preferred destinations.
