摘要： Magnetic, conformable articles for use with traffic bearing surfaces are disclosed which comprise an organic binder having magnetic particles distributed therein. The articles may be employed in intelligent vehicle guidance systems, and in systems to guide other mobile objects such as farm animals, pets, or visually impaired pedestrians. Methods of making the articles and methods of using the systems to control and/or guide a mobile object using the magnetic field generated from the articles are also described.

摘要： The present invention relates to an optical fiber including a fiber core and at least one coating substantially encapsulating the fiber core, wherein the at least one coating includes a material forming a data storage medium which is capable of digitally encoding information at a data density of at least about 4 bits per centimeter. Both magnetically and optically encoded fibers are disclosed. Also disclosed are a method of making an optical fiber of the present invention, methods of digitally encoding information onto an optical fiber, and a method of retrieving information digitally encoded onto an optical fiber.

摘要： A roofing granule can include a base particle having a base material and a layer covering the base particle of the roofing granule. The layer can has a first material and a second material that includes a metal carbonate, wherein the first and second materials include a same metal element, and the base material is different from the first material. In a process of forming the roofing granule, the layer can have pores. The process can include infiltrating a fluid into the pores of the layer while the base particle is present and adjacent to the layer, wherein the fluid includes a carbonate. The process can further include reacting the carbonate with a metal compound within the layer to form a metal carbonate within the layer. The roofing granules can be used in roofing products.

The present invention relates more particularly to roofing products for use with photovoltaic elements, and to photovoltaic systems that include one or more photovoltaic elements joined to a roofing substrate. In one embodiment, a roofing product includes a flexible roofing substrate having a top surface, the top surface having one or more granule-coated zones thereon capable of acting as a receptor zone or an exposure zone, each zone being adapted to receive one or more photovoltaic elements; and an adhesive suitable for securing photovoltaic elements to one or more of the granule-coated zones, the adhesive capable of forming a bond to the granules and the top surface of the flexible roofing substrate and to the bottom surface of the photovoltaic elements.

摘要： Algae-resistant roofing granules include a mineral core and an exterior coating including clay, colloidal silica, phosphate, a metal oxide, and a photocatalytic particulate having an average size under 100 nm. By varying the proportions of the components to the binder for the exterior coating, improved control of the pot life of the coating composition can be achieved, and the binder can be formulated to accommodate different manufacturing conditions.
