A cementing composition useful in cementing oil, gas and water wells, comprising water, hydraulic cement and an effective amount of water soluble fluid loss additive comprised of a blend of a copolymer (i) of acrylamide/vinyl imidazole in a weight percent ratio of from about 95:5 to 5:95, said copolymer (i) having a molecular weight range of from about 100,000 to 3,000,000, and a copolymer (ii) of vinyl pyrrolidone and the sodium salt of vinyl sulfonate in a weight percent ratio of 80:20 to 20:80, said copolymer (ii) having a molecular weight range of from about 100,000 to 3,000,000. The blend is comprised of a weight percent ratio of copolymer (i) to copolymer (ii) in the range of 20:80 to 80:20. The composition can also optionally include a dispersant such as sodium or potassium salts or a sulfonated naphthalene formaldehyde condensate.

Crude oil middle distillates with improved cold flow properties, containing small amounts ofA. conventional flow improver on an ethylene base, andB. copolymers which consist of 10 to 95 mol-% of one or more acrylacrylates or alkylmethacrylates with C.sub.1 - to C.sub.26 -alkyl chains, and of 5 to 90 mol-% of one or more ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids or their anhydrides, where the copolymer is reacted to a large extent with one or several primary or secondary amines into the monoamide or amide/ammonia salt of dicarboxylic acid, and the quantitative proportion of A to B is from 40 to 60 up to 95 to 5.

Reaction products which are suitable as demulsifiers for crude oil emulsions, comprise olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids and polyetherols and are obtainable byA) condensation of one or more unsaturated C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 -carboxylic acids or their derivatives of the general formula I ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or carboxyl, R.sup.3 is hydrogen or methyl and R.sup.1 together with the carboxyl group may form a 5-membered or 6-membered anhydride ring, with a polyetherol of the general formula II ##STR2## where R.sup.4 is a radical of a monohydric or polyhydric alcohol or of a phenol or of an alkylphenol of 7 to 30 carbon atoms or a radical of an alkylphenol/formaldehyde or alkylphenol/acetaldehyde condensate, R.sup.5 is a branched or straight-chain C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 -alkylene group, where different units [R.sup.5 -O] may be present within a polyalkylene oxide chain, and X is an integer of from 5 to 120, in a molar ratio of compounds II to I of from 2:1 to 10:1 and in a weight ratio of from 25:1 to 1,000:1,B) polymerization of the resulting condensate with one or more unsaturated carboxylic acids I and, if required, further olefinically unsaturated monomers copolymerizable with the carboxylic acids I, the amount of the carboxylic acids I being from 50 to 100 mol %, based on the amount of the olefinically unsaturated monomers, and the molar ratio of the polyetherol II to the sum of the olefinically unsaturated monomers used in process steps A) and B) being from 1:5 to 1:200, and subsequentC) condensation of the resulting reaction mixture, with the proviso that not all hydroxyl groups are converted,and a process for their preparation, mixtures of the reaction products with organic solvents and the use of the reaction products and of the mixtures as demulsifiers for crude oil emulsions.

Agglomerated particles of water-swellable addition polymers, the agglomerated particles having an average particle diameter of from 20 to 5000 &mgr;m and consisting of primary particles having an average particle diameter of from 0.1 to 15 &mgr;m, being preparable by polymerization of water-soluble monomers in the presence of from 1′ to 10% by weight of a regulator and at least 2000 ppm, each based on the monomers, of a crosslinking agent in the manner of a water-in-oil polymerization and subsequent azeotropic removal of water from the water-in-oil polymer emulsions, containing the primary particles, in the presence of agglomerating polyalkylene glycols which (a) are obtainable by an addition reaction of C2-C4-alkylene oxides with alcohols, phenols, amines or carboxylic acids, and (b) contain at least 2 polymerized alkylene oxide units, and disintegrating into the primary particles on introduction into an aqueous medium, processes for preparing the agglomerated polymer particles and use of the agglomerated particles as thickeners for print pastes.

Graft polymers which contain N-vinyl units and in which the grafting base is a polymer which contains in each case at least 5% by weight of units of the formulae ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers are grafted onto the grafting base in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100, and which have K values of at least 7 (determined according to H. Fikentscher in 5% strength by weight aqueous solution at 25.degree. C. and pH 7), are prepared by polymerization of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of polymers which in each case contain at least 5% by weight of units of the formulae I and/or II as the grafting base in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100, and are used as dispersants for pigments, as additives for detergents and cleaning agents, and strength agents for paper and as soil stabilizers and for fertilizer compaction.
