In an aluminum alloy composite material including an aluminum alloy matrix and a reinforcing material such as fibers, whisker or particles, intermetallic compounds made of Al and at least one selected from a group of Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, V, W, Ta, Nb, Ti and Zr are finely dispersed in the matrix existing among reinforcing material elements so as to maintain rigidity of the matrix alloy necessary to support the reinforcing material elements at high temperature. Optimum shapes and volumetric density of such intermetallic compounds are experimentally obtained.

A light metal composite material reinforced by alumina-silica fibers and a method for producing same. The composite material can have high mechanical qualities such as high workability and high wear resistance as well as high thermal qualities such as high fatigue resistance and high thermal conductivity and can also have high mating performance not to cause much wear of the mating member when the assemblage of alumina-silica fibers incorporated in the composite material as reinforcing members includes not more than 17 wt. % non-fibered particles, particularly not more than 7 wt. % of non-fibered particles of not smaller than 150 microns diameter, and has a virtual density of 0.08-0.3 g/cm.sup.3. The efficiency of production of the composite material is improved by binding the alumina-silica fibers provisionally with one another by an inorganic binder to have a compression strength no lower than 0.2 kg/cm.sup.2.

According to the present invention, a sliding structure whereby wear resistance of a pair of sliding members that are able to slide relative to each other is improved and the friction coefficient can be reduced is provided. The sliding structure in which a lubricating oil is fed between sliding faces of a pair of sliding members that are able to slide relative to each other such that at least one of the members is allowed to slide is provided. The sliding structure is characterized in that: an amorphous carbon film is formed on the sliding face of at least one sliding member so as to result in a D to G band integrated intensity ratio in the Raman spectrum of between 1.5 and 2.0; and the lubricating oil existing between the sliding faces contains a compound comprising at least molybdenum and sulfur so as to result in a molybdenum content of not less than 400 ppm relative to the lubricating oil.
