    摘要: A linking process allows a head-end unit (HEU) of a railroad train to determine the sequence of cars in the train using wireless links between nodes on the cars, and requires no physical connection between the nodes or cars. Each car in the train is equipped with a wireless communication device which models an oscillator i. Each oscillator is phase-variable, the phase .theta..sub.i linearly increasing from 0 to 1 such that, when the i.sup.th oscillator "fires", transmitting a packet, and phase .theta..sub.i then jumps back to zero. When a car receives the transmission of another car, it changes the phase of its oscillator according to a phase-response curve function, setting up a wave pattern of transmission from nodes, from one end of the train to the other end. The wave pattern, along with protocol logic, enables each car to determine the sequence in which cars are arranged in its vicinity. The protocol logic also enables each car to forward or relay this "local map" from all cars to the HEU, allowing the HEU to construct the entire train map which is the sequence of cars in the train. The compiled train map is compared with consist information and the operator is notified of any discrepancy.

    摘要: A redundant sensor system for predicting railway hazards including breaks in each rail, the location of the breaks, and determining when a railway vehicle has a flat wheel. Vibration sensors are distributed along both rails of a railway. Each sensor has a detection band at least within the sensing range of adjacent sensors and it is positioned such that the sensor detects vibration in both the horizontal and vertical axis of the rail. A central processor evaluates the data from these sensors and identifies the rail break, the location of the break, and the flat wheel.

    摘要: A pressure sensor having structure for generating a magnetic force to balance forces on opposing sides of a flexible diaphragm centered within a pressure chamber allows fluid pressure to be introduced into the chamber on one side of the diaphragm. A first magnetic coil is positioned on another side of the diaphragm and a second coil is mounted to the diaphragm. When fluid pressure is introduced into the pressure chamber, the diaphragm deflects, and the magnitude of current required to generate a recentering magnetic force which causes the diaphragm to be recentered constitutes a measure of the fluid pressure. Since the recentering magnetic force is substantially unaffected by temperature, the fluid pressure measurement obtained is substantially independent of temperature.

The overlay signal received at the receiver front end is squared in a squaring loop, producing spectral lines at DC and twice the overlay signal frequency, or 2&ohgr;, where &ohgr;=2&pgr;f and f is the center frequency of the overlay signal.     摘要: A digital television (DTV) receiver is provided with a sounder comprising a wideband transmitter and a plurality of wideband receivers having separately located receiving antennas, so that the sounder is, in effect, a bistatic radar system for any given channel, in order to characterize a significant nearby, indoor reflector. A microprocessor receives the timing information generated by the wideband transmitter impulses and the reflected impulse returns to each of the receiving antennas, and calculates a multipath model representing the three-dimensional location of a significant, nearby scatterer.

    摘要: A communication method reduces both the asset energy requirements and communication channel occupancy in a reduced order GPS asset tracking system. The asset is provided with an indication of its position so as to allow detection of substantial movement of the asset at the asset. Reduced order GPS data derived at the asset, such as a railcar, is compressed to allow for shorter railcar data transmission times. This, in turn, reduces both the transmitter energy requirements and communication-channel occupancy, while allowing substantial railcar position changes to be conveniently detected at the railcar. This capability can be used to save further substantial railcar energy by, for example, reporting to the central station less frequently when the railcar position is unchanging.

    摘要: A mobile local area network (LAN) of tracked assets utilizing minimal power and bandwidth allows a large number of assets to be tracked in a practical manner. The mobile LAN is established between a plurality of tracking units in close proximity. Assets are approximately located according to their connection in the mobile LAN where the exact location of at least one of the network nodes is known. Each tracked asset has capability to independently determine and report its position to a central station, and each asset also has capability to communicate locally with other cooperative assets via the LAN. The LAN is dynamically reconfigurable so that as other cooperative assets come into proximity, they can join the network, and as others move away, they can leave the network. Within the network, a protocol is followed which assigns one of the assets to be the "master" and all others to be "slaves". The master asset takes responsibility for determining its own exact geographical position via LORAN, OMEGA, Global Positioning System (GPS) or other navigational aid. When connected in a LAN, slave assets report their ID to the master asset and do not determine their own locations in order to conserve power. The master reports its location and ID, as well as the IDs of the other assets in the LAN, to the central station. Uncertainty in the location of a slave asset is limited by the known possible geographical extent of the LAN which is known a priori.
