A process for producing cast polymer is carried out by using a mold treated by the following steps: coating the glass surface of the mold with polysiloxane; heating the coated glass surface at a temperature in the range of from more than about 150.degree. C. to a temperature at which the coated polysiloxane is not hardened yet; and wiping the coated surface of baked polysiloxane. Not only is easy mold release attained, but also repeated use of the same mold becomes possible.

A novel thermosetting resin composition comprising at least one [(2,3-epoxypropoxy)alkyl]trialkoxysilane and at least one selected from polymers, prepolymers, copolymers and coprepolymers of epoxy-group-containing vinyl monomers, which may further contain at least one selected from polymers, prepolymers, copolymers and coprepolymers of vinyl monomers containing no epoxy group, is disclosed. This composition is cured by heating with addition of a ring-opening polymerization catalyst and remarkably improves surface hardness, abrasion resistance, weathering resistance, chemical resistances, heat resistances, etc. of acrylic resins and many other plastic materials without imparing the inherent transparency and other optical properties of these materials when it is applied on the surface of them and cured.

Transparent resin composites comprising a substrate of a transparent plastic material coated with a cured film of at least one [(2,3-epoxypropoxy)alkyl]trialkoxysilane or of at least one [(2,3-epoxypropoxy)alkyl]trialkoxysilane and at least one transparent polymer compatible with said silane are provided. The resin composites have excellent abrasion resistance, surface hardness, heat resistance, chemical resistance, weathering resistance, etc. well retaining the transparency and other optical characteristics of the substrate resin. These resin composites can be used as transparent plastic panels, lenses, etc.

A transparent coated resin composite comprising: (a) a resin substrate mainly comprising polymethyl methacrylate, (b) a precoating which is formed of a silicon compound selected from the group consisting of methacryloxyalkyltrialkoxysilanes, aminoalkyl-trialkoxysilanes, vinyltris(alkoxyalkoxy)silanes, vinyltrialkoxysilanes and hydrolysates thereof on said substrate, and (c) an over-coating which is formed of a silicon compound selected from the group consisting of glycidoxyalkyltrialkoxysilanes, N-aminoalkylaminoalkyl-trialkoxysilanes, (3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)alkyltrialkoxysilanes and hydrolysates thereof on said precoating is provided. The over-coating may contain other polymerizable monomers. The over-coating which provides the substrate with the good abrasion resistance and anti-fogging property is firmly bonded to the substrate by virtue of the precoating and exhibits excellent abrasion resistance as well as anti-fogging property without impairing the optical characteristics of methyl methacrylate resins.

An electrophotographic photoreceptor comprises an electrically conductive support, a photoconductive layer provided thereon, and a protective layer coated on the photoconductive layer, wherein the protective layer comprises a product of uncatalized hydrolysis of a composition essentially consisting of at least one specific epoxysilane compound, at least one specific alkylalkoxysilane compound, and at least one specific aminosilane compound. The photoreceptor is very useful in that it is free from wear due to friction with paper and cleaning members, keeps high resolving power, and is sufficiently proof against continuous copying under conditions of high temperature and high humidity.

A carrier for immobilization of microorganisms is prepared by impregnating a fabric such as cotton gauze having a mesh size of 10-50 with 20-50% by weight of a vinyl monomer such as ethlene glycol methacrylate and polymerizing the monomer with ionizing radiation to form a polymer coating on the fabric. A microorganism such as Trichoderma reesei is grown in a liquid culture medium in contact with the polymer-coated fabric and the polymer-coated fabric is recovered containing growing cells of the microorganism. The polymer-coated fabric has high air permeability and permits good diffusion of liquid culture medium.

A mixture of a specified siloxanylalkyl ester monomer and a specified vinyl monomer is polymerized by exposure to an ionizing radiation at low temperatures and the resulting polymer is worked with a lathe cut to form a contact lens. The contact lens obtained is free from any optical distortion, has good dimensional stability and exhibits high oxygen permeability. In a preferred embodiment, a monomer mixture comprising a siloxanylalkyl ester, a methacrylate or acrylate, N-vinylpyrrolidone, and a small amount of a dimethacrylate or diacrylate is exposed to a total dose of 1.times.10.sup.5 -5.times.10.sup.6 roentgens at a low temperature (-80.degree. C. to -20.degree. C. and at a dose rate of 8.times.10.sup.4 -2.times.10.sup.6 roentgens per hour, and the resulting polymer is worked into a contact lens by a suitable forming process involving cutting, grinding and polishing operations.
