The invention includes cell lines that express various subunit combinations of GABA receptors. The GABA receptor- and GABA receptor subunit-expressing cell lines are highly sensitive, physiologically relevant and produce consistent results. The invention further provides methods of making such cells and cell lines. The GABA receptor- and GABA receptor subunit-expressing cells and cell lines provided herein are useful in identifying modulators of GABA receptors.
