Novel 1,3-dialkyloxy-2-propanol and alkoxylates thereof may be prepared in good yield by a convenient process comprising adding epichlorohydrin to a stoichiometric excess of alcohol, wherein the ratio of alcohol:epichlorohydrin is at least about 3:1, preferably in the presence of a Group 1A metal hydroxide and a phase transfer catalyst. The result shows excellent selectivity of to the 1,3-substitution positions, and the alkyl chain may be saturated or unsaturated and may contain one or more heteroatoms. The alkoxylates may include repeating alkoxy units in the 2-position. The compositions are useful as surfactants, diluents, and the like.

Novel alkylene oxide-extended alkoxylates of a branched 1,3-dialkyl-oxy-2-propanol may be prepared by a convenient process comprising adding epichlorohydrin to a stoichiometric excess of a branched alcohol, wherein the molar ratio of branched alcohol:epichlorohydrin is at least about 3:1, preferably in the presence of a Group 1 A metal hydroxide and a phase transfer catalyst, followed by alkoxylation in the presence of an ionic catalyst. The branched alkyl chain may be saturated or unsaturated and may contain one or more heteroatoms. The repeating alkoxy units from the alkylene oxide are in the 2-position. The compositions are useful as surfactants, diluents, and the like, and may be less expensive than other branched surfactants.

The invention includes a blend composition comprising (a) about 1 to about 15 weight percent of amorphous polypropylene (b) about 99 to about 85 weight percent of crystalline polypropylene, wherein the molecular weight of the amorphous polypropylene is lower than the molecular weight of the crystalline polypropylene; the molecular weight (Mw) of the amorphous polypropylene is higher than about 50,000, preferably 100,000 g/mole; the amorphous polypropylene has a MWD less than about 3; and wherein the percentages are based on total amorphous plus crystalline polypropylene. Preferably, amorphous and crystalline polypropylenes are at least about 90 weight percent propylene units. Preferably, the amorphous polypropylene has a glass transition temperature greater than about -10.degree. C. The invention includes processes for preparing compositions of the invention, including a multistage process. Additionally the invention includes articles, sheets, films, foams and fibers comprising or prepared from compositions of the invention as well as processes for making the things, preferably processes involving stretching a composition of the invention. The processes include a process comprising, extrusion or injection blow molding; extruding, or thermoforming a composition of the invention; as well as a process comprising reacting a composition of the invention with a coupling agent.

A process for preparing a cellular polymer containing perforated cell windows in the presence of a perforating agent being a substance that has a critical surface free energy of less than about 23 mJ/m.sup.2 is disclosed. The cellular polymers obtained according to this invention have a fine cell structure and show enhanced dimensional and thermal insulation stability. The invention also relates to rigid polyurethane foam prepared in the presence of, for example, particulate poly(tetrafluoroethylene) or a liquid polyfluoro- or perfluorocarbon, with a boiling point of at least 130.degree. C., as perforating agent.
