    摘要: Disclosed herein are an improved method and apparatus for optically reading pre-recorded magnetic information on a magneto-optic recording element. The invention addresses the technical problem of minimizing the adverse effect of unpredictable variations in the state of polarization of the beam of radiation used for read-out. Such variations may be produced, for example, by birefringence variations in a transparent layer or substrate through which the recorded information is recovered. According to the invention, the undesired polarization variations are sensed from the system's output signal, and an error signal representative of such variations is produced. Such error signal is used to adjust the state of polarization of the read-out beam prior to detection by the system's detector elements. Preferably, the read beam is directed through the combination of a quarterwave plate and a Faraday rotator, and the error signal is used to control the magnetic field of the Faraday rotator. In effect, the combination of the quarterwave plate and Faraday rotator behaves like a variable phase retardation plate as far as the resultant output signal is measured by differential detection is concerned.

    摘要: A near-field optical system having one or more solid state lasers and an aerodynamically shaped slider which comprise a single integrated, monolithic device fabricated from the same base semiconductor material. The monolithic optical head can be quickly and easily attached to the read arm of an optical read/write device without requiring attachment of separate laser elements, and without micropositioning or use of optical microscopy for positioning the lasers. The optical head comprising a single semiconductor substrate including a first region which defines a slider having an air bearing surface, and at least one second, laser region which defines a diode laser, with the diode laser having an emission face which is substantially co-planar with the air bearing surface. The semiconductor substrate preferably includes an active layer, a p-clad layer or reflective layer adjacent a first side of the active region, an n-clad layer or reflective layer adjacent a second side of the active layer, and an n-semiconductor layer adjacent the n-clad layer. A slider region of the semiconductor substrate includes an air bearing surface, adjacent the p-clad layer, which is aerodynamically structured and configured to define a slider. The integral lasers include a p-electrical contact adjacent to the p-clad layer and proximate to the laser emission face, and an n-electrical contact adjacent to the n-clad layer or an n-semiconductor layer. The laser mode is defined by oxidized or ion-diffusion regions associated with the p-clad layer or n-clad layer of the laser. A conductive via through the substrate allows electrical connection with the p-side contact to be achieved from the n-side of the substrate. The optical head is used in a near-field optical system with an optical medium having a phase change layer.

The magnetic-optical function region may be configured for magnetically assisted thermal recording wherein writing is carried out primarily by laser power modulation to selectively heat portions of a medium, together with assistance of an applied magnetic field to establish a preferred direction of magnetization pattern in the medium. The magnetic-optical function region may alternatively be configured for thermally assisted magnetic writing wherein writing is carried out primarily by modulation of magnetic field, together with assistance of a laser which heats the medium to reduce the medium coercivity and thereby assist in the magnetic recording.

According to the invention, one of the two magnetic layers is doped with zirconium. The addition of zirconium has the effect of substantially lowering the Curie temperature of the doped layer, thereby enlarging the Curie temperature differential between the magnetic layers. The zirconium additive also has the effect of stabilizing the magnetic properties of the doped layer.

    摘要: A pump module comprises a power source, a plurality of laser diodes, a controller and light combining optics. The laser diodes each have an activated state and a deactivated state. The laser diodes receive current from the power source and output light when in the activated state and do not receive current from the power source when in the deactivated state. The controller switches the plurality of laser diodes from a first power mode, in which a first subset of the laser diodes is in the activated state, to a second power mode, in which a second subset of the laser diodes is in the activated state, responsive to a power mode setting. The light combining optics are configured to combine the light from the activated laser diodes and output the combined light as pump energy.A laser system comprises a pump module and a gain medium. The pump module is configured to output pump energy having a wavelength that is within a wavelength range of 874-881 nm. The gain medium is in the path of the pump energy and is configured to absorb the pump energy and emit laser light responsive to the absorbed pump energy. In one embodiment, a controller switches a power level of the pump energy between first and second power levels responsive to a power mode setting input from an operator.

The laser system includes a photodetector for converting returned light from the optical fiber cap to an electronic signal for comparison to a trigger threshold value known to be indicative imminent fiber cap failure. The returned light can be the main laser treatment wavelength, an auxiliary wavelength such as an aiming beam or infrared wavelengths generated by a temperature of the optical fiber cap. In the event the electronic signal reaches the trigger threshold value, the laser system can be temporarily shut-off or the power output can be reduced.
