An apparatus for controlling an internal combustion engine comprises a position sensor for detecting an operational position of an accelerator pedal operated by a driver, a microprocessor for generating a target throttle valve opening in accordance with a predetermined function in response to the operational position of the accelerator pedal, and a servo motor provided with a throttle valve opening sensor and a servo drive circuit for controlling the opening of the throttle valve of the engine to the target throttle valve opening. In the microprocessor, there is provided a compensation circuit for compensating, during the acceleration, for the target throttle valve opening in response to the operational positions of the accelerator pedal immediately before and after the acceleration and an engine operational parameter immediately before the acceleration.

A torque detection mechanism can be provided for a power train and its control unit without newly adding a sensor and its signal processing module. As a gear pair for the torque detection mechanism of a phase difference type, existing gears in a transmission are used, or a gear pair for this mechanism are provided adjacent to these existing gears. From phase signals sent from pickups, a phase difference signal is obtained by use of one part of existing devices in the control unit. The torque detection mechanism can be realized with the minimum number of component parts by utilizing the existing members and spaces instead of newly adding a sensor and its module. The invention can be applied to either of FF and FR cars, and has a practical structure in respect of the performance, costs and reliability.

In order to prevent a catalyst for an internal combustion engine from decreasing efficiency by deterioration after long time use of the catalyst, the decreased efficiency of the catalyst is determined, and the internal engine is controlled based on results of the determination so as to maintain high efficiency of the catalyst. The catalyst is installed in an exhaust pipe of the engine. Sensors for detecting conditions of exhaust gas both at upstream side and downstream side of the catalyst are provided, respectively. As for the sensor, for example, an oxygen sensor of which output varies stepwise at λ=1, or a sensor of which output varies in proportion to air-fuel ratio can be used. Detected values of the sensors are taken into a control unit, eliminating efficiency and deteriorating degree of the catalyst are estimated by comparison of the detected values, and the engine is controlled so that the eliminating efficiency becomes maximum. In accordance with the present invention, a preferable exhaust gas cleaning characteristics of the catalyst can be maintained because the decreased efficiency of the catalyst is determined exactly and the engine is controlled so as to prevent the catalyst from decreasing efficiency.

A system and method for the adaptive control of a process in which a feed forward control signal corresponding to a process demand is calculated according to a predetermined algebraic function, while a feedback correction signal is calculated on the basis of an error of a process feedback signal indicative of an error of a controlled variable from a predetermined setting, and the controlled variable of the process is controlled on the basis of the sum of these two signals. The adaptive control is such that, when a set point of the function deviates from the actual process demand, a value corresponding to the error appears in the feedback correction signal, and this value is used for automatically modifying the function itself to ensure the adaptive control of the process. A determination is made whether or not the process is in the steady state and when steady state operation is determined, the function of the feed forward control signal is modified.

In an automatic control system, controls receive an input indicative of a deviation between feedback and demand signals and produce an output which in turn is applied to a plant to control it. A diagnostic device includes a model having an equivalent characteristic to the controls and receives the deviation signal. When a noise coming into the automatic control system is detected or when a deviation between the outputs of the model and controls is sufficiently small, no model operation is performed, and the output of the controls is determined as that of the model. However, when the deviation between the outputs of the model and the controls is large, the model is supplied with an input thereby performing a model operation. A resultant output of the model is then compared with the output of the controls to produce an alarm indicative of an abnormal state of the controls in accordance with a deviation between these outputs.
