A torque detection mechanism can be provided for a power train and its control unit without newly adding a sensor and its signal processing module. As a gear pair for the torque detection mechanism of a phase difference type, existing gears in a transmission are used, or a gear pair for this mechanism are provided adjacent to these existing gears. From phase signals sent from pickups, a phase difference signal is obtained by use of one part of existing devices in the control unit. The torque detection mechanism can be realized with the minimum number of component parts by utilizing the existing members and spaces instead of newly adding a sensor and its module. The invention can be applied to either of FF and FR cars, and has a practical structure in respect of the performance, costs and reliability.

The air flow rate sensor includes a tube of inorganic material, a platinum wire wound in convolutions on the surface of the tube, and a glass coating applied at least to the surface of the resistor while allowing a part of the surface to be exposed. The glass coating has a thickness smaller than the diameter of the resistor wire and enables equalization of pulsations of the sensor output to be obtained because of the thermal capacity of the glass coating.

Air flowing through an air cleaner is passed through a main passage and drawn into an internal-combustion engine, with a part of the air flowing through the main passage flowing into a by-pass passage having an air flow sensor mounted therein. A length of the by-pass passage is substantially three or more times longer than that of a part of the main passage corresponding thereto. Accordingly, even when the internal-combustion engine is operated with a throttle nearly totally open and the air in the main passage is pulsated, the average flow rate in the by-pass passage increases due to the inertial lag effect obtained by lengthening the by-pass passage, so that it is possible to prevent the output of the flow sensor from being undesirably lowered.

Openings are formed in the wall of the intake barrel at the upstream and downstream sides of the venturi member. A bypass passage is formed by these openings and the groove. A spacer is interposed between the intake barrel and the bypass passage forming member. According to the control method when the lockup clutch is in the lockup state, a variation of a generated torque is detected. When the range of the torque variation detected exceeds a predetermined value, an engine torque is reduced by controlling the engine, and the automatic transmission is controlled to compensate for a reduction of the driving torque due to a reduction of the engine torque. Thus, the speed change ratio is changed to the low gear side. The control unit includes a unit for controlling an output torque of an engine according to a command value, a unit for changing the transmission ratio of the automatic transmission, a unit for detecting a variation of the engine torque, a unit for deciding a target driving torque, a unit for reducing a torque command value when the range of a detected variation of the torque has exceeded a predetermined value when the lockup clutch was in the lockup state, and a unit for deciding a transmission ratio at which the reduction of the driving torque due to the reduction of the engine torque is compensated for.

A part of the air flowing through a main passage flows into a by-pass passage. A flow rate detector is provided in the by-pass passage. An outlet of the by-pass passage is opened at the narrowest portion of a venturi structure provided in the main passage. The by-pass passage is in communication with a pressure-accumulating chamber, which is in communication with the main passage at the portion thereof which is on the downstream side of the venturi structure. The pressure of the air flowing backward from the engine is stored in the pressure-accumulating chamber. The pressure in the pressure-accumulating chamber serves as a passage resistance with respect to the flow of the air in the by-pass passage. Accordingly, the flow rate detector permits determining the flow rate of the air, which does not contain a component representative of a backward flow of the air.
