A ratchet device is disclosed which includes a body, a ratchet wheel rotatably supported by the body, a feed pawl having an engaging portion engageable with teeth of the ratchet wheel, a support member for holding the feed pawl, a member for biasing the feed pawl toward the wheel teeth, and a drive device for moving reciprocating the support member between two positions to place the feed pawl alternately in its fully advanced and retracted positions, so as to rotate the ratchet wheel a predetermined angle in one direction. The ratchet device further includes a stopper member for contact with the feed pawl when the pawl is placed in the fully retracted position, to thereby prevent the engaging portion of the pawl from disengaging from the teeth of the ratchet wheel. Further, the engaging portion of the feed pawl is shaped so that it engages mutually opposed faces of the ratchet wheel when the feed pawl is in contact with the stopper member, to thereby lock the ratchet wheel against clockwise and counterclockwise rotations thereof. Also disclosed is a tape feeding apparatus which utilizes the ratchet device.

The detecting device includes a first light emitter for emitting a first radiation toward a vicinity of the electronic component, a second light emitter disposed in the vicinity of the holder, for absorbing the first radiation, and emitting a second radiation having a wavelength different from that of the first radiation, toward the electronic component, and a photoelectric device disposed on one of opposite sides of the electronic component which is remote from the second light emitter. The photoelectric means is insensitive to the first radiation and receives a projection image of the electronic component formed by the second radiation.

An apparatus for conveying and positioning a substrate of a printed-wiring board, comprising: a conveyor system for transferring the substrate, including a pair of parallel spaced-apart side frames at least one of which is movable relative to the other; a positioning device including a support member, a pair of parallel spaced-apart holder members disposed on the support member and movable relative to each other so as to be engageable with opposite sides of the substrate parallel to the side frames, to thereby hold the substrate, and a device for moving the support member along X and Y axes, so as to position the substrate within a predetermined area; a device for moving the support member between an aligned position in which the holder members are aligned with the side frames, and an unaligned position for positioning the substrate in the predetermined area; and a device for connecting the movable holder member and the movable side frame when the support member is in the aligned position. The distance between the holder members is variable with a change in the distance between the side frames.

The component sucked by a sucker is first centered in one direction by closing movements of a first pair of opposed positioning members toward the component, and then centered in another direction normal to the above one direction by closing movements of a second pair of opposed positioning members which occur only after the first pair of positioning members are opened. The first pair of positioning members are provided on an assembly holding the sucker, and the second pair of positioning members are provided on the sucker holder assembly or separately from the sucker holder assembly. A method of taking an electronic component or chip out of each of plural pockets which are formed at regular intervals along a longitudinal direction of a carrier tape and which have openings in the upper surface of the tape, through vacuum suction of a suction member, while the tape is intermittently fed in a feeding direction parallel to its longitudinal direction, including the steps of: (a) bringing the pockets having the chips, into a position where their openings are covered with a covering device having a notch with a width narrower than that of the chip and wider than that of the suction member; (b) feeding the tape by the regular interval in the feeding direction, and permitting a leading chip of the chips covered with the covering device to be brought into a suction position where the leading chip is right below the suction member and the notch; (c) lowering the suction member through the notch so as to allow the suction member to suck and hold the leading chip; (d) retracting the covering device while the tape is kept stationary, so as to clear the covering device from above the leading chip held by the suction member; and (e) lifting the suction member to take the leading chip out of the pocket. An apparatus for taking a chip out of a carrier tape is also disclosed.
