A biaxially oriented polyester film to be laminated onto a metal plate and molded, (A) which comprises a copolyester comprising (a) terephthalic acid in an amount of 82 to 100 mol % and 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid or a combination of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid and other dicarboxylic acid in an amount of 0 to 18 mol % of the total of all dicarboxylic acid components and (b) ethylene glycol in an amount of 82 to 100 mol % and cyclohexanedimethanol or a combination of cyclohexanedimethanol and other diol in an amount of 0 to 18 mol % of the total of all diol components, having (c) a glass transition temperature of 78° C. or more and (d) a melting point of 210 to 250° C., and containing (e) porous silica particles with a pore volume of 0.5 to 2.0 ml/g which are agglomerates of primary particles having an average particle diameter of 0.001 to 0.1 &mgr;m; and (B) which has the following relationship between the highest peak temperature (Te, °C.) of loss elastic modulus and the glass transition temperature (Tg, °C.): Te−Tg≦30. This film has improved taste-and-flavor retainabilities, particularly taste and flavor retainabilities after a retort treatment, without losing the excellent moldability, heat resistance, impact resistance and retort resistance of a copolyester film.

A biaxially oriented polyester film to be molded and laminated with a metal sheet which shows excellent moldability when it is laminated with a metal sheet and subjected to a can making process such as drawing and from which a metal can such as a drink can or food can having excellent heat resistance, retort resistance, taste and odor retention properties, impact resistance and corrosion preventing properties can be produced. This polyester film is produced from a copolyester which contains porous particles having an average particle diameter of 0.1 to 2.5 &mgr;m, a pore volume of 0.05 to 2.5 ml/g, a specific surface area of 50 to 600 m2/g and a compressive resistance of 1 to 100 MPa and has a glass transition temperature of 70° C. or higher and lower than 78° C., a melting point of 210 to 250° C. and an intrinsic viscosity of 0.50 to 0.80 dl/g.

A laminated film comprising another polyester layer can be formed from this aromatic polyester film. An aromatic polyester containing a small amount of a sulfonic acid phosphonium salt used as one of the aromatic polyesters forming this laminated film is excellent in electrostatic casting properties and resistance to the contamination of an electrostatic wire, and an aromatic polyester containing an inorganic anti-fungus agent is used for antifungal application.

A biaxially oriented laminate polyester film for magnetic recording medium, which is a laminate film comprising a base layer (A) formed of a polyester resin and a coating layer (B) which exists on one surface of the base layer (A) and contains a binder resin, added fine particles and a surfactant, wherein the base layer (A) is a biaxially oriented film which substantially contains no fine particles added or contains 0.001 to 0.1% by weight of added fine particles having an average particle diameter of 0.005 to 0.3 &mgr;m, the coating layer (B) has a surface having a central plane roughness (SRa) of 5 nm or less, the surface of the coating layer (B) has protrusions having a major diameter of 0.05 &mgr;m or more in a density of 80,000 pieces/mm2 or less and has extra-large protrusions having a major diameter of 10 &mgr;m or more in a density of 20 pieces/cm2 or less. Further, a thin film layer (C) may be further laminated on a surface on the side of the base layer (A) of the laminate polyester film which side is not in contact with the coating layer (B). According to the present invention, there is provided a biaxially oriented laminate polyester film useful as a base film for a magnetic recording medium which has excellent running durability and electromagnetic conversion characteristics and is almost free from drop-out.
