摘要： A catalytic converter for use in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine having a catalyst coated substrate with an inlet face oriented at an angle less than ninety degrees to the flow of exhaust gas entering the converter and fluid flow channels extending through the substrate from the inlet face to an outlet face and oriented at an angle less than ninety degrees to the inlet face. The mounting configuration within the canister allows for an increase in the frontal or inlet area without a corresponding increase in the converter cross section while the angled flow channels minimize the effect of the angled mounting of the substrate relative to the exhaust flow on the backpressure imposed on the exhaust system by the converter.

摘要： An internal combustion engine exhaust gas catalytic converter has a simplified basic construction--using only vertically disposed inner and outer louvered tubes defining a radial flow bead catalyst bed, and a pair of shell members embracing the upper and lower ends of the inner and outer tubes to retain the tubes and close the upper and lower ends of the catalyst bed. The shell members have an enlarged waist defining an outlet chamber surrounding the outer tube, and abut along radially-outwardly-directed axially-extending flanges which seal the outlet chamber and close the lower end of the inner tube to direct exhaust gases through the catalyst bed.

摘要： A low profile two-bed catalytic converter including substantially identical top and bottom housing plates and top and bottom catalyst-retaining plates therebetween which define an inclined catalyst-containing space. A plurality of openings in the retaining plates distribute exhaust flow uniformly through the catalyst-containing space. A partition made up of two spaced plates has a plurality of uniformly distributed exhaust flow apertures therein and extends through the catalyst-containing space to divide the space into upper and lower catalyst beds. An air distribution means between the partition plates has outlet nozzles for discharging air laterally into streams of exhaust gas flowing through apertures in the air distribution means as the exhaust gases pass from the upper to the lower catalyst bed.

摘要： An exhaust system for an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders, comprising: a exhaust manifold for providing fluid communication of exhaust of the plurality of cylinders to a catalytic converter, the exhaust manifold comprising a first exhaust pipe and a second exhaust pipe, the first exhaust pipe being in fluid communication with the second exhaust pipe and the second exhaust pipe being in fluid communication with the catalytic converter, the first exhaust pipe providing a first fluid path for exhaust of a first plurality of cylinders of the engine and the second exhaust pipe providing a second fluid path for exhaust of a second plurality of cylinders of the engine, the second fluid path being shorter than the first fluid path; a controller for determining whether to deactivate the first plurality of cylinders in accordance with a predetermined engine starting condition, wherein deactivation of the first plurality of cylinders causes the second plurality of cylinders to operate at a condition corresponding to an engine output demand, wherein an exhaust of a first temperature is expelled by the second plurality of cylinders into the catalytic converter, the first temperature being greater than an exhaust temperature that would be generated by the first and the second plurality of cylinders operating at the condition corresponding to the engine output demand.

摘要： A metal foil substrate catalytic converter for use in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, having corrugated metal foil sheets secured together in a stack so that a plurality of axially extending fluid flow paths are defined therebetween. Disposed at predetermined intervals throughout the stack are foil retainer sheets having integral foil tabs extending outwardly from the side edges and folded about the outer side surface of the substrate to form a segmented foil skin thereabout. The segmented foil skin may be welded continuously along its length to secure the foil sheets in a unitary catalyst substrate and to provide a weld surface for attachment of the catalyst substrate directly to the converter canister wall.

摘要： An electronic compass for vehicles comprising at least two magnetic sensors arranged in use to be respectively responsive to orthogonal horizontal components of a magnetic field which includes the earth's magnetic field and a spurious magnetic field which is associated with the vehicle, for producing electrical signals corresponding to said components, data storage means arranged to store signals derived from the sensors as the vehicle is rotated in the horizontal plane during a compass setting cycle, and signal processor means responsive to electrical signals produced by the sensors after the setting cycle has been completed and to the signals stored during the setting cycle, for providing output signals indicative of the bearing appertaining to the heading of the vehicle in which the effects of the spurious magnetic field are compensated for.
