    摘要: A multi-color electroluminescent display has a plurality of discrete, laterally spaced areas of light emitting material formed over respective groups of first and second electrode regions. The light emissive material over each group is capable of emitting radiation of a different color. The multi-colored device is formed by a sequence of steps where each emitting layer is deposited as. a precursor which is susceptible to patterning and which is then converted into its polymer which is not susceptible to subsequent patterning steps. This allows a second color to be deposited on top of a first color, the second color being patterned while avoiding damage to the first color below it.

    摘要: An integrated electro-optical device according to the invention comprises a pixellated liquid crystal modulation layer superimposed over an electronic detection layer. Modulator pads for the liquid crystal layer may be formed as electrically conductive combs to achieve optical polarization. Where the liquid crystal layer provides selective absorption of unpolarized light, and separate polarizers between the liquid crystal and detection layers are therefore unnecessary, the device comprises such a liquid crystal layer superimposed over the electronic detector layer. Further, an integrated electro-optical device, optionally of the above type, has a plurality of pixels of the liquid crystal layer for each pixel of the detector array. This allows optical shuttering of the detector pixels by electrically modulating the pixellated liquid crystal layer.

    摘要: A switchable holographic device which includes a first polarizer having a spatially varying direction of polarization. The device also includes a liquid crystal device arranged to act as a controllable phase plate, the liquid crystal device having a predetermined phase shift in one state and substantially no birefringent activity in another state. The liquid crystal device is thus controllable to selectively alter the polarization of at least some of the radiation passing therethrough or to have substantially no optical activity. An output polarizer receives the radiation from the liquid crystal device so that, depending on the state of the liquid crystal device, the hologram is replayed or not replayed.

    摘要: A display comprises a light modulator defining an array of pixels arranged in rows (2) and columns (3) and addressable to select between at least an opaque state for each pixel and a transparent state for each pixel. The display includes a light emitting device arranged adjacent the light modulator to act as a light source for the display. The light modulator is a passive matrix liquid crystal display device and the light source is an electromumninescent LED. The light source is addressable to emit light from selected regions LER, each region overlapping at least a plurality of rows (2) of the light modulator. In this way, the problem of electrical cross-talk in the display is reduced.
