Surfaces useful for cell culture comprise a support to which is bound a CAR material, and, bound to the CAR material, an ECM protein, or a biologically active fragment or variant thereof such as elastin, fibronectin, vitronectin, lamninin, collagen I, collagen III, collagen IV, and collagen VI. Also, optionally present on the surface is an active factor, preferably a polycationic polymer or a biologically active fragment or variant thereof, such as polyethyleneimine (PEI), poly-D-lysine (PDL), poly-L-lysine (PLL), poly-D-ornithine (PDO) or poly-L-ornithine (PLO). This surface is used in cell culture to promote cell attachment, survival, maintenance of function, and/or proliferation of primary liver cells. The invention also relates to methods utilizing this surface, such as methods for attachment, survival, maintenance of function, and/or proliferation of cells. Further disclosed is the use of the surface in cell culture with serum-free medium. Methods of screening using the surface of the invention are also disclosed.

The present invention relates to methods for detection and evaluation of metabolic activity of eukaryotic and/or prokaryotic cells based upon their ability to consume dissolved oxygen. The methods utilize a luminescence detection system which makes use of the sensitivity of the luminescent emission of certain compounds to the presence of oxygen, which quenches (diminishes) the compound's luminescent emission in a concentration dependent manner. Respiring eukaryotic and/or prokaryotic cells will affect the oxygen concentration of a liquid medium in which they are immersed. Thus, this invention provides a convenient system to gather information on the presence, identification, quantification and cytotoxic activity of eukaryotic and/or prokaryotic cells by determining their effect on the oxygen concentration of the media in which they are present.

Improved integrated processes for the production of alkyl aromatic compounds are disclosed wherein aromatic compounds which may be treated for removal of deleterious substances are reacted with olefin compounds, which may also be treated for contaminant removal, in the presence of acidic zeolite catalyst(s) to produce the desired alkyl aromatic compound(s). The aromatic and preferably also the olefin feeds are treated substantially to remove contaminants, particularly the nitrogen compounds contained therein, before they are brought together for reaction in the presence of the zeolite catalyst(s). In accordance with the present invention, it has been found that feed pretreatment for removal of nitrogen compounds significantly improves the run length and life of the acidic zeolite catalyst(s). The feed pretreatment of this invention may include the steps of distillation, extraction, and/or adsorption by solid adsorbent, which may be regenerated in accordance with further embodiments of this invention.
