These stabilizers protect the polycarbonate against heat and oxidative degradation, and in addition, increase the hydrolysis resistance of the polycarbonate. The composition contains an aromatic polycarbonate and(i) dialkyl and/or dicycloalkyl monosulfides or polysulfides in an amount of 0.001 to 5 weight %, and optionally(ii) aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monoalcohols or polyalcohols or their derivatives in an amount of 0.001 to 2 weight %said percent being relative to 100 weight % of aromatic polycarbonate.

The composition contains an aromatic polycondensate and an agent which is a compound conforming structurally to formula (I) ##STR1## or which is a member selected from the group consisting of oligocarbonate, polycarbonate, copolycarbonate, polyestercarbonate and polyesters which contain structural units conforming to formula (Ia) ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1 to R.sup.10 and X are defined. Accordingly, a composition is prepared comprising mixing a thermoplastic polycarbonate resin and 0.01 to 1 mole-% of a transesterification catalyst anda) 0.1 to 5 mole-% of an aromatic polycarboxylic acid, optionally along with about 0.1 to 5 mole-% of at least one member selected from the group consisting of aliphatic hydroxy carboxylic acids and aliphatic polyalcohols, orb) 0.1 to 5 mole-% of H.sub.2 O, optionally along with at about 0.1 to 5 mole-% of at least one member selected from the group consisting of aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acids and an aliphatic alcohols, orc) the additives of said a) and b), ord) 0.1 to 5 mole-% of at least one member selected from the group consisting of diarylcarbonates and oligocarbonates,said percent based in every case on moles aromatic carbonate structural units ##STR1## in which --O--R--O is a diphenolate residue.
