An automotive safety airbag installation includes a padded instrument panel having a U-shaped tearable seam in the panel skin, and a concealed airbag assembly having two hinged lids spaced from the instrument panel internal surface, such that during inflation of the airbag the lids swing outwardly to cause a flap-like section of the panel to deflect upwardly for expansion of the airbag into the passenger compartment. One of the lids closes a gap between the airbag and instrument panel to guide the airbag through the instrument panel and to protect both the airbag and the instrument panel from damage. The padded instrument panel is designed to achieve good shock absorbing action when struck by a human body, in the absence of airbag deployment.

A friction brake system is provided for applying a braking torque to said vehicle. A controller unit generates control signals to the electric motor/generator and the friction brake system for controllably braking the vehicle in response to a drivers brake command. The controller unit determines and amount of regenerative torque available and compares this value to a determined amount of brake torque requested for determining the control signals to the electric motor/generator and the friction brake system.

A system for remote testing of a plurality of vehicles on a test track includes a plurality of guide wires and position transponders embedded in the track. Each vehicle to be tested includes an onboard vehicle controller (VCON) which in turn includes various servo components for operating the steering wheel, shift lever, brake and accelerator pedals of the vehicle. A base computer receives desired missions from an operating computer, and the base computer loads a respective mission into each VCON via an rf link. Then, the base computer monitors the vehicles for proper, safe operation. The VCONs execute the missions loaded by the base station and periodically report their status to the base computer.

The method includes the steps of measuring an air conditioning compressor discharge pressure and determining if the discharge pressure is greater than a predetermined maximum pressure. The method also includes the step of beginning a forced recirculated air mode if the discharge pressure is greater than the predetermined maximum pressure. The method further includes the steps of determining if the air conditioning system is already in a forced recirculated air mode if the discharge pressure is less than the predetermined maximum pressure, and determining if the discharge pressure is less than a predetermined acceptable pressure if the air conditioning system is already in a forced recirculated air mode. The method still further includes the step of beginning an outside air mode if the discharge pressure is less than the predetermined acceptable pressure.

The reinforcement member is fixedly secured to the B-pillar and the hinge plates of a passenger door are interconnected to the first and second hinge mounting portions. In one embodiment, the reinforcement member includes first and second spaced apart flanges which extend substantially in an inboard direction. The first and second spaced apart flanges are welded or otherwise securely attached to the B-pillar. Further, in the preferred embodiment, the reinforcement member includes a first tab upwardly extending from the first hinge mounting portion and a second tab downwardly extending from the second hinge mounting portion which provide additional points for securing the reinforcement member to the B-pillar of the body side panel.

The two outer seat sections are capable of moving independently of the center seat section from a first position for receiving passengers in a seated position to a second position forward of the first position to allow access to the rear seat assembly through each of the pair of rear side doors. The rear seat is disposed at a higher level than the middle seat when in its normal seating position. The respective pivotal axes of the seat backs of the middle and rear seat assemblies are generally disposed in a common substantially horizontal plane. When the seat back of the middle seat assembly and the seat back of the rear seat assembly are each in their second generally horizontal position, the seat backs combine to form a substantially horizontal cargo storage surface.

The spring seat has an annular upwardly opening trough, and the strut has an annular downturned lip extending into the trough providing a labyrinth seal inhibiting the entry of foreign matter into the bearing. The bearing base and bearing cap have overlapping portions also for the purpose of inhibiting entry of foreign matter into the bearing.

Subsequently, the overlying side walls of the strut towers are attached to the end portions of the cross beam by a plurality of widely spaced spot welds thus providing a high degree of rigidity and accuracy to the framing structure.
