There is provided a method of storing bananas comprising the steps of (a) exposing said bananas to an atmosphere that contains one or more ethylene-active compound, and (b) after said step (a), exposing said bananas to an atmosphere that contains one or more cyclopropene compound while said bananas have color stage 2 to 6 on the seven-stage scale, wherein said bananas are kept in a modified-atmosphere package for a time period that includes at least a time interval that lasts for 1 hour, wherein said time interval begins between the conclusion of said step (b) and 72 hours from the conclusion of said step (b), and wherein said modified-atmosphere package is constructed so that the transmission rate of carbon dioxide for the entire package (PCT) is from 2,400 to 120,000 cubic centimeters per day per kilogram of bananas.

A fruit ripening system wherein a continuous inflow of fresh air and ethylene gas is provided into a fruit ripening chamber in correct proportions to form a fruit ripening gas mixture that will predictably ripen fruit in a very short period of time, regardless of the previous state of ripening of the fruit. At the same time, the ripening chamber is continuously purged of carbon dioxide that is a byproduct of the ripening process so that during the ripening process a concentration of carbon dioxide sufficient to materially impede the ripening process is never allowed to build up. Critical parameters are defined for ripening temperature, the minimum ethylene gas concentration, time of exposure to the ethylene gas, and purging of carbon dioxide.

A film for wrapping respiring produce is disclosed. The film comprises from about 2% to about 22% ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) with the balance of the film selected from food-safe, EVA-compatible, thermoplastic resins, such as low density polyethylene, linear low density polyethylene, and mixtures of those materials. A bag for storage and shipment of respiring produce, such as bananas, made from that film material, as well as a method for shipping and storing respiring produce, such as bananas, avocados, salad components or flowers, utilizing that bag, are also disclosed.

A pass-through system and method for treating and/or pre-cooling perishable products uses a conveyor system with a treatment chamber that is configured to be contained (or closed) to provide a sealed environment and enhanced with forced air flow to recirculate air and/or functional substances including, e.g., sanitizers, as well as ripening management and conditioning agents, across the surface of perishable products. The enhanced forced air is an integral part of the system for efficient treatment and can also be cooled to accomplish rapid cooling.

An inclusion complex of an amorphous α-cyclodextrin, or derivative thereof, with encapsulated ethylene is provided by exposure of the dry solid amorphous α-cyclodextrin to ethylene gas under pressure. The inclusion complex will have applications in a number of fields including fruit ripening.

The present invention relates to the use of palladium doped ZSM-5 to adsorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs) derived from organic matter, wherein the Si:Al ratio of the ZSM-5 is less than 5 or equal to 100:1, and wherein the palladium doped ZSM-5 is used in an environment comprising less than 10 vol % of oxygen.
