The joint membrane sealed to the inner cup rim and vacuum seals the joint head within the inner cup to form a capsular space. The lubricant is disposed within the capsular space. The implant stem that is attached to a distal bone and that attaches through the joint head through the joint membrane.

The cage conformably engages between the endplates of the adjacent vertebrae to effectively distract the anterior disc space, stabilize the motion segments and eliminate pathologic spine motion. Expanding selectively (anteriorly, along the vertical axis of the spine) rather than uniformly, the cage height increases and holds the vertebrae with fixation forces greater than adjacent bone and soft tissue failure forces in natural lordosis. The cage shape intends to rest proximate to the anterior column cortices securing the desired spread and fixation, allowing for bone graft in, around, and through the implant for arthrodesis whereas for arthroplasty it fixes to endpoints but cushions the spine naturally.

Apparatus and methods for treating a spinal disc are disclosed. An opening is created in the annulus fibrosis, and nucleus pulposus is removed from the interior of the disc. The interior is lined with a nonporous, bioabsorbable liner, and filled with a fill material, such as nucleus pulposus, to cause the liner to expand to engage tissue surrounding the interior. The liner may be a sheet of extra-cellular matrix material that is introduced into-the interior, or a bladder of extra-cellular matrix material including a neck communicating with an interior region of the bladder. The sheet or bladder may be carried by a delivery device, e.g., a catheter or rod. After the interior region is filled, the opening is closed using a plug or other closure device. The plug may include threads on its external surface for securing the plug in the opening.

Electrical energy is delivered from a source of electrical energy via the distal tip and the needle to tissue surrounding the passage to close the passage as the needle is withdrawn.

A joint prosthesis assembly includes a stem for disposition in a canal of a first bone constituting a first portion of the joint, a neck fixed to the stem, a collar fixed on the neck and having a peripheral groove, and an articulating head fixed on the neck. The assembly further includes a cup for disposition in a second bone constituting a second portion of the joint, an insert disposed in the cup to provide an interior lining for the cup, the insert being configured to receive the articulating head for movement therein, and the insert having a peripheral groove therein. A sleeve-shaped membrane is provided with a first O-ring fixed thereto at a first end thereof for disposition in the insert groove, and a second O-ring fixed thereto at a second end thereof for disposition in the collar groove. The membrane is thereby disposed to capture particulate debris generated by the articulating head in the insert. There is further contemplated a method for installing the assembly.
