The present inventive concept discloses design providing for the mounting of a CNC cutting machine upon a sturdily framed wheeled vehicle. The “vehicular cutting machine” can then be transported upon its own integral structure, to practically any jobsite. This mobility is a particular advantage to the customer at the jobsite where there is a requirement for a smaller number of precision parts in a short time during a plant or facility start-up, shutdown, or power outage. The inventive concept presents a method of use of CNC cutting machines that has not been used in the metal-cutting industry, oftentimes because of harsh road environments or the sheer difficulty of designing and building a self-powered, self-equipped CNC cutting machine. The present inventive concept negates the problems previously encountered by the prior art, and makes possible a cutting machine which is transportable and immediately available for operation upon reaching a designated website.

An apparatus for cutting pipe includes a central cutting station formed by a ring member carried on a support at the ground so as to be independent of the pipe with an in-feed conveyor apparatus on one side and an out-feed conveyor apparatus for on the other side. The ring member rotates around the axis of the pipe and carries in the rotation a camera, a cutting device and a welding head. The support assembly provides movement of the ring member transversely to and longitudinally of the axis of the pipe. The cutting head can be tilted to form a bevel on the pipe end. The apparatus is controlled by a control system for controlling rotation of the ring member and longitudinal movement of the support assembly so as to cut the pipe in selected directions for welding of the ends or for cutting pipe pups.

A track is connected to the mounting structure and defines a drive plane. A moveable structure is coupled to the track and configured to move circumferentially along the track. A tool holder is connected to the moveable structure and positions a cutting tool relative to a cutting plane in a second portion of the section of pipe, the cutting plane substantially perpendicular to the non-linear longitudinal axis at a cutting location on the pipe. The mounting structure adjusts to position the track such that the drive plane is parallel to the cutting plane, separated from the cutting plane, substantially non-perpendicular to the non-linear longitudinal axis at the first portion on the pipe.

The invention relates to a numerically controlled tool-holding device for jet/beam cutting. It is a device designed specifically for the requirements of jet/beam cutting of thick, plate-shaped components, and it is to be understood as a component of a gantry-type, robot-like machine. With the aid of this device it is possible to change the orientation of the jet/beam-producing tool (3) relative to the component and to produce the bevel forms which are usual in this plate thickness range—very flat bevels of great length are typical—without the risk of collisions and with particularly great accuracy. The device is designed to withstand the environmental stress which prevails during jet/beam cutting of thick, plate-shaped components, i.e. great heat and the production of large amounts of dust. It is characterized in that the tip of the torch or the TCP (6) of a jet/beam-producing tool (3) has a normal distance from the pivot axis (4) which is greater than the extent of the housing (8) in a plane perpendicular to said pivot axis (4), and the horizontal part of the connecting element (5a) is designed in such a manner that its distance from the pivot axis (4) is greater than that between the TCP (6) and said pivot axis (4), and the range of motion of the jet/beam-producing tool (3) about the pivot axis (4) is significantly greater than 180 degrees.

A plasma cutter nozzle and a weld nozzle are mounted to the carriage. A drive mechanism adjusts positioning of the plasma cutter and weld nozzles through varying control by a controller during operation. Additionally, a bearing support is provided for cradling the pipe during fabrication. The bearing support includes a plurality of bearing plates. A wedge structure is secured to each of the bearing plates and to a fixture base to form a nest for receiving the pipe. An isolation pad is disposed between the wedge structure and the fixture base.

A shaft extending perpendicularly from the ring gear carries a torch arm block assembly which positions the cutting torch in relation to the pipe. A bracket is adaptable between a first configuration prohibiting and a second configuration permitting rotation of the shaft about its longitudinal axis for bevel cutting round pipes and out-of-round pipes, respectively. In the second configuration, a guide wheel assembly mounted on the shaft traces the surface of the pipe. A tension assembly continually urges the guide wheel assembly into contact with the surface of the pipe so that the angular position of the torch arm block assembly accurately reflects the out-of-round conditions of the pipe.

The waste hopper is configured to move synchronously with the gantry in the first direction. The waste hopper is positioned under the gantry to capture waste from a thermal cutting process performed by the thermal cutting device.
