    Abstract: A wheel assembly for traversing a path along a ground surface having a layer of soil, the wheel assembly comprising a central support and an airless flexible covering mounted on the central support and having a plurality of rigid sections and a plurality of flexible sections. The outwardly protruding spokes urge the rigid sections into the layer of soil when the rigid sections contact the ground surface. The flexible sections flex inwardly when the flexible sections contact the ground surface so that the rigid sections and the flexible sections cooperatively form a corrugated pattern in the ground surface without urging the soil to side margins of the airless flexible covering, the corrugated pattern having a plurality of valleys formed by the rigid sections and a plurality of peaks formed by the flexible sections.

    Abstract: A terrain traversing device includes an annular rotor element with a plurality of co-planar microspine hooks arranged on the periphery of the annular rotor element.     Abstract: A skate wheel includes an outer polymeric layer, an inner polymeric layer, and an intermediate layer. The inner polymeric layer has a hardness which is less than the hardness of the outer polymeric layer. The inner and outer polymeric layers are preferably comprised of polyurethane. The intermediate layer is made of a hard plastic or metal that extends through the cross-section of the roller wheel, separating the outer and inner layers. The intermediate layer prevents compression of the harder outer polymeric layer onto the softer inner polymeric layer. This provides a smoother ride while maintaining good precision and speed.     Abstract: A non-pneumatic tire with an annular body of resilient elastomeric material and an outer cylindrical member supported by circumferentially spaced-apart ribs, is provided with four vibration-reducing features. First, the tire has an outer tread surface with a crown radius. Secondly, the tread has a pattern with a plurality of circumferential grooves and lateral grooves arranged to reduce uneven contact pressures caused by radial forces carried by the tire's ribs. Thirdly, the spacing of the ribs is randomly varied around the circumference of the tire to broaden a vibration spectrum caused by the ribs and reduce peak vibrations. Fourthly, a wheel rim that supports the annular body is provided with a structurally incorporated hoop to reduce deflection of the wheel rim during tire operation.

    Abstract: A wheel construction having bearing means therein defining an axis of rotation. The bearing means is housed in an elastomeric sleeve having an elastic compressibility characteristic. A pair of identically shaped metallic stampings, each having a central cylindrical shell part axially aligned with the other, is provided for housing the bearing structure therein. Each of the stampings has a surface portion intermediate the central cylindrical shell part and the outer periphery thereof, which are coextensive with a central plane through the wheel construction perpendicular to the axis of rotation. The axially aligned cylindrical shell parts engage at least a portion of the elastomeric sleeve of the bearing structure. An annulus of moldable synthetic resin material is fixedly secured to the peripheral surface of the pair of metallic stampings to hold the cylindrical shell part and the surface portions in axial alignment. The annulus has an elastically flexible characteristic to thereby permit the pair of stampings to shift radially relative to one another while maintaining said surface portions in sliding engagement with one another.
