摘要: The invention relates to systems that provide variable stiffness and/or variable damping using an electroactive polymer transducer. Systems described herein offer several techniques that provide variable and controlled stiffness and/or damping. A transducer may be implemented using open loop control, thereby providing simple systems that inactively deliver a desired stiffness and/or damping performance. Alternately, closed loop control techniques permit electroactive polymer transducer designs that actively adapt the stiffness and/or damping performance of a system. Further, transducers may be implemented in a device whose stiffness changes with deflection of the polymer.

摘要: This invention relates to a ball joint assembly adapted for use in a motor vehicle. The ball joint assembly includes a housing (12) defining socket chamber (18) and having an opening (32); a composite ball joint bearing (20) disposed within the socket chamber; a ball stud (24) supported by the composite ball joint bearing and having a shank portion (30) which projects through the opening of the housing; and a seal assembly (40) adapted to seal the opening between the ball stud and the socket chamber. According to the present invention, the composite ball joint bearing is formed from a first plastic material (20A) and a second magnetostrictive alloy material (20B) which is adapted to change its shape when in the presence of a magnetic field to thereby change the rotational and oscillation properties of the ball joint assembly.

摘要: There is provided a small and inexpensive actuator which has a simple structure and can obtain a large displacement. When voltage is applied to electrodes 2a and 2b formed on an inner circumferential surface and an outer circumferential surface of a piezoelectric ceramic 1 wound like a coil, deformation occurs in such a direction that an inner circumferential side of the piezoelectric ceramic 1 wound like the coil is contracted, and an outer circumferential side is expanded. Accordingly, if one end portion of the piezoelectric ceramic 1 formed into the coil shape is fixed, the other end portion is rotated in accordance with the deformation of contracting the diameter of this coil.

摘要: A damping apparatus comprises an actuator consisting of an oscillating element for transforming an electric oscillation into a mechanical oscillation and an amplifying mechanism for amplifying the resulting mechanical oscillation as interposed between two structures at least one of which is a source of vibration so that the mechanical oscillation output of the actuator is superimposed on the vibration to be controlled. As such, it may include a sensor disposed in the path of propagation of the vibration to be attenuated and a control device which, in response to the output signal from said sensor, applies an electric oscillation associated with the vibration to be attenuated. A sensor transforms the mechanical vibration to be attenuated into an electric oscillation and, in response to this output electric oscillation, the control device applies an electric signal associated with the vibration to be attenuated to the oscillating element. This oscillating element transforms the applied electric signal into a mechanical oscillation having a very small amplitude. This small-amplitude mechanical oscillation is amplified by the amplifying mechanism and an amplified mechanical oscillation is made available from the actuator. This output mechanical oscillation from the actuator interposed between two structures is superimposed on the target vibration in its path of propagatin to produce the desired damping effect.

At least one electrode body (1′) in each case has an electrode surface facing the elastomer layer (3). At least one opening (2) is present to which an a two-dimensional region in which there is no two-dimensional bond between the elastomer layer (3) and the electrode body (1′). A compressible medium is provided in the area of the opening.

摘要: A variable stiffness suspension bushing (18) that is useful in a suspension of a motor vehicle to reduce brake shudder includes a shaft or rod (40) connected to a suspension member (12), an inner cylinder (42) fixedly connected to the shaft or rod (40), and an outer cylinder (44) fixedly connected to a chassis member (16). A magnetorheological (MR) elastomer (48), having iron particles embedded therein, is interposed between the inner (42) and outer (44) cylinders, and a coil (54) is disposed about the inner cylinder (42). When the coil (54) is energized by electrical current provided from a suspension control module (20), a variable magnetic field is generated so as to influence the magnetorheological (MR) elastomer (48) whereby variable stiffness values of the elastomer (48) are obtained to provide the bushing (18) with variable stiffness characteristics in order to eliminate compromises heretofore necessary when using single, fixed rate bushings.
