The internal cavity or cavities are defined by external skins and perimeters as well as internal structural elements acting as interior dividers, interior sub-volumes and perimeter structures, each of which may contain a plurality of orifices for sound communication forming a sequence of first order Helmholtz acoustical resonators with respective natural frequencies for sound absorption. Panels may be assembled with or without selected interior elements or perimeter structures as a basis for infinite flexibility in building sound absorbing walls of selectable sound absorbing characteristics and size. The numbers and geometries of the orifices as well as the sizes of the internal cavities may be varied generally, thus adding to the flexibility of the invention. Sound dissipating material may also be incorporated in the cavities of the panel.

A sound absorption device in accordance with this invention includes an enclosure loosely containing hollow beads. Preferably, the hollow beads have openings, and differ with respect to the volume of the hollow space defined by the walls of the beads, the wall thicknesses of the beads, the size of the openings of the beads and/or the number of openings on the beads. Through Helmholtz resonance, vorticity and tortuous path scattering, the beads damp sound waves over a broad range of frequencies. Preferably, the beads are formed from a material able to withstand relatively high temperatures, such as ceramic or nickel. The beads can thus be used to damp sound in applications which generate significant heat in addition to sound, such as aircraft engines, rocket motors or other loud, heat-generating sources, for example. Also, by forming the beads from a material with a relatively low thermal conductivity, the beads can also be used for thermal insulation in addition to sound absorption.

A panel for constituting sound insulating wall is provided with a front plate, a rear plate, and a sound absorbing member put between the plates. The sound absorbing member contains reduced plastic products coated with magnetic material such as magnetic tape and magnetic sheet. The front plate is provided on the sound source side and constituted of a plate having numerous holes. The sound absorbing member is composed of a permeable bag and the reduced plastic products in the bag so that the bulk specific gravity and permeation resistance can be 0.05-0.4 and 3-90 dyn.S/cm.sup.4, respectively. The reduced plastic products may be reduced plastic products alone not subjected to other processings, or may be a mixture of reduced plastic products and molded bodies of reduced plastic products. Alternatively, only molded bodies of reduced plastic products can be put in the permeable bag. Therefore, an inexpensive panel for constituting sound isolating wall which has an excellent sound absorbing characteristic, a moisture resistance, a water resistance, and a light weight can be fabricated by utilizing plastic products coated with magnetic material such as magnetic tape and magnetic sheet, and particularly scrap of plastic products.

A heat-insulating panel serving also as a concrete frame excellent in bending strength characteristics and dimensional stability and a method of manufacturing the panel. Cut or shredded pieces having lengths of 20 mm or less of magnetic tapes are heated to 100.degree. to 200.degree. C., thus forming contracted pieces of magnetic tapes in curled shapes. The curled contracted pieces of magnetic tapes in an amount of 100 parts by weight are mixed with 10 to 50 parts by weight of a thermosetting resin as a binder, and are compression-molded under a pressure ranging from 2 to 20 kgf/cm.sup.2 at a temperature from 100.degree. to 200.degree. C.
