A method and an arrangement for determining properties of fibers in a supension of said fibers with the aid of spectroscopic measurements carried out in a wavelength range within the near infrared range (NIR), comprising introducing the fiber suspension into a measuring cell (20) which is provided with a filter (35) and an outlet (47) at one end thereof; concentrating the fiber suspension in the cell while simultaneously measuring the absorbency until a predetermined value is obtained at that wavelength at which the measurement is effected, or for the highest peak of the registered spectrum, at which point supply of the suspension is stopped, the outlet (47) from the cell is closed and a complete spectrum within the wavelength range is registered, whereafter the sought properties of the fibers are determined in a computer unit on the basis of earlier calibrations carried out on samples of known fiber properties. An arrangement for washing a fiber suspension-sample includes a cylinder having a piston, piston rod and a filter which is mounted close to the end of the cylinder opposite the piston rod, so as to divide the cylinder into a large piston-accommodating chamber and a small chamber, wherein delivery pipes leading to the cylinder and outlet pipes extending therefrom are connected to the small chamber and inlet pipes through which sample is delivered to the cylinder and outlet pipes for washed sample are connected to the large chamber.

Disclosed is a method/apparatus to determine any one of a plurality of parameters: shape, area, chemical composition, diameter, color, number, thickness, width, length, absorptivity, reflectivity, transmittivity, dielectric constant, raman scattering profile, fluorescence, surface tension, roughness, profile, density, position and orientation. A method of determining the properties of fiber pulp by separating a batch of a predetermined volume, by measuring its temperature, and by filtering water from it by means of a pressure difference. In accordance with the present invention, substantially all the water is filtered off from the pulp mixture, an air flow is produced through the filtered pulp cake by means of a pressure difference, the resisting effect of the pulp cake on the flow of air is measured, and the pulp cake is weighed, whereafter the properties of the pulp are calculated on the basis of the measurements, from mathematical models developed for this purpose.The apparatus developed for carrying out the method according to the invention has a vessel equipped with a stirrer for the specimen, a device for measuring the temperature of the specimen, means for directing the specimen onto the wire and for removing the water through the wire by means of a pressure difference, a device for measuring the pressure difference or through-flow produced across the wire and the pulp layer on the wire, and devices for registering the obtained measurements and for the output of the properties of the pulp. For directing a batch of a predetermined volume from the vessel into the measuring vessel placed against the wire, this determination apparatus has a specific portioning device, and the device has been fitted not to register the pressure difference or throughflow produced across the wire and the pulp layer on the wire, until substantially all the water has been removed from the pulp layer filtered onto the wire. In addition, this apparatus has means for removing the pulp layer from the wire and a device for weighing the pulp layer.

The particle size range of a paper pulp suspension is determined by flowing the suspension up a measuring tube having a filter at the bottom thereof. When a plug of suspended material has formed, the inlet of the measuring tube is closed off. A liquid is then fed to a member which forms a gap in the plug of material and passes up through a measured portion of the suspension. The time taken for the liquid to pass through the plug to a given height is indicative of the mean particle size of the suspension.

In addition, other fiber properties such as fiber length, width and wall thickness can be obtained from fluorescence images, and lignin content from fluorescence spectra. The present invention will provide a process for determining the uniformity of pulp samples in terms of the physical and chemical properties of the individual fiber-like particles, particularly wood pulp fibers.

An instrument for analyzing and dispensing objects larger than about 70 &mgr;m in diameter is based on a flow cytometer with a novel fluidic switch arrangement for diverting a portion of a sample stream in response to detector signals in a flow cell. The instrument is particularly adapted for dispensing multicellular test organisms like nematodes or large microspheres for use in screening large libraries of potential pharmaceutical agents. Hydrodynamic focussing is used to center and align the objects in the flow cell. The objects pass through a sensing zone where optical or other characteristics of the objects are detected. The detector signals are processed and used to operate a fluidic switch that is located downstream from the sensing zone. The fluid stream containing the detected objects emerges from the flow cell into air where a fluid stream controlled by the fluidic switch diverts portions of the stream containing no sample objects or sample objects not meeting predetermined characteristics. The undiverted sample stream deposits selected sample objects into a plurality of containers.

A method of detecting amyloid fibrils in biological samples utilizing flow cytometry is described. It has been found that the measurement of fluorescence from amyloidophilic dyes, such as thioflavin T and Congo red, as well as side scatter and forward scatter measurements are particularly useful in detecting the presence of amyloid fibrils. Flow cytometric detection of amyloid fibrils in subjects such as humans and livestock can be employed for diagnosis, assessment of therapeutic efficacy, research, and monitoring of livestock for the presence of infectious amyloidosis.
