Time delay units are operated in series with phase shifters to apply phase shifts to signals fed to or received from antenna elements. The array may be subdivided into sub-arrays each associated with its own time delay unit, and with each antenna element associated with its own phase shifter. The phase shifters are operated to compensate for location mismatch between time delay units and antenna elements, and also to compensate for practical limitations of the time delay units, such as length and quantization limitations.

An active array radar system is controlled by photonic signals. The array of N antenna elements is divided into M subarrays, each having N/M antenna elements. Tunable lasers provide M optical wavelengths within non-overlapping bands. For reception, the microwave signals are optically modulated onto a single fiber for each subarray. Time delays are introduced for an offset between elements in a subarray and for an offset between subarrays. By using wavelength division multiplexing, a true time delay is attributed to each antenna element on the array. A non-coherent optical combiner having an array of N photodetectors demodulates the receive signals and recovers the coherent sum of the RF signals.

A "just in time" pipelined signal processing architecture for a phased array antenna simultaneously updates the weights of all phase control elements of the antenna with reduced wiring complexity and fast beam steering updates. Signal propagation paths between a pipelined communication link--through subarray control processors distributed along the pipeline link--and phase control elements of the antenna array are provided with respectively different serial pipelined transport delays. These delays are such that all phase control signals produced by the subarray control processors are applied simultaneously to their associated subsets of antenna phase control elements. The use of serial (FIFO) delays to equalize pipeline and weight processing latency allows each subarray controller to process and forward serial beam vector data at the same data rate at which it is received from an upstream host processor.
