A phase modulator faithfully reproduces higher frequency modulation using an offset phase-locked loop (OPLL) without passing excessive noise through an increased bandwidth of the OPLL. A quadrature modulator modulates information from a baseband signal onto a passband IF signal and, after a limiter strips away amplitude variations, the OPLL reproduces the phase modulation on an RF signal. The OPLL introduces a group delay that does not vary linearly with the modulation frequency and that consequently causes distortion when uncompensated. A baseband filter filters the amplitude of the baseband signal and introduces a complementary group delay that compensates for the OPLL group delay and results in a combined group delay of the baseband filter, quadrature modulator, limiter and OPLL that remains substantially constant as modulation frequency varies. Compensating for the OPLL group delay reduces distortion and the spectral energy at offset frequencies from the carrier frequency of the RF signal.

A method and apparatus for direct-conversion transmission generates a first frequency signal that is non-harmonically related to a transmit frequency signal, divides the first frequency signal to obtain a mixing frequency signal, divides the first frequency signal to obtain an intermediate frequency reference signal, generates the transmit frequency signal by using the mixing frequency signal to downconvert the transmit frequency signal into an intermediate frequency feedback signal, and phase-locks the intermediate frequency feedback signal to the intermediate frequency reference signal. The transmit frequency signal may be phase modulated, and may serve as an input to a saturated-mode power amplifier that can be configured for corresponding amplitude modulation. Alternatively, the un-modulated transmit frequency signal serves as the carrier signal input to a quadrature modulator, which imparts I/Q modulations to it, thereby producing a modulated carrier signal for input to a linear power amplifier.

The step-up frequency mixer is arranged within a phase locked loop that further comprises a frequency divider that is likewise supplied with the modulation data, combined with channel pre-selection data, for the purposes of compensation. This arrangement prevents low-frequency components of the modulation signal from being eliminated by the phase locked loop. In addition, noise components and undesirable interference frequency components that are produced in the mixer are suppressed by the phase locked loop.

It is shown that the benefit of this is a reduction in noise associated with the reduction of noise due to using a divider with a lower division coefficient.
