An integrated receiver with channel selection and image rejection substantially implemented on a single CMOS integrated circuit is described. A receiver front end provides programmable attenuation and a programmable gain low noise amplifier. Frequency conversion circuitry advantageously uses LC filters integrated onto the substrate in conjunction with image reject mixers to provide sufficient image frequency rejection. Filter tuning and inductor Q compensation over temperature are performed on chip. The filters are tuned using local oscillators to tune a substitute filter, and frequency scaling during filter component values to those of the filter being tuned. In conjunction with filtering, frequency planning provides additional image rejection. The advantageous choice of local oscillator signal generation methods on chip is by PLL out of band local oscillation and by direct synthesis for in band local oscillator. The VCOs in the PLLs are centered using a control circuit to center the tuning capacitance range.

An apparatus and method are provided for tracking the poles of an integrated RC filter as well as the absolute value of a current source. A single tracking oscillator contains integrated elements such as a programmable resistor and fixed capacitor or a programmable capacitor and fixed resistor. The programmable element is programmed such that a particular response from the RC filter is achieved and the word used to program the programmable element is then supplied to other integrated RC filters having components that were fabricated at the same time as the RC filter in the tracking oscillator. A highly accurate external capacitor or resistor is supplied to determinate the absolute value of the programming element, which is used to program one or more current sources containing the programmable resistor.

A tunable electronic filter circuit is provided including an input terminal and an output terminal connected to the input terminal with a node therebetween. An inductor, a variable capacitor, and a variable resistor are connected between the node and ground. Coupled to the variable capacitor and the variable resistor is a feedback control circuit. The feedback control circuit is operable to tune the variable capacitor in order to set a predetermined frequency, or center frequency, of the electronic filter circuit. The feedback control circuit is further operable to tune the variable resistor in order to calibrate a quality factor of the electronic filter circuit. In use when an input signal is applied to the input terminal, the electronic filter circuit passes an output signal to the output terminal. Such output signal includes components of the input signal within a predetermined frequency bandwidth set by the predetermined frequency and filters out other components of the input signal. As an option, a “slave” tunable electronic filter circuit may be providing including a variable capacitor and a variable resistor which are also controlled by the feedback circuit. This allows the “slave” filter to be tuned while being used.

A broadband tuner includes a tracking filter with calibration to compensate for component errors and drift. The filters use off-die inductors that are preferably within a system-in-package (SIP) with other critical tuner components, which produces a highly integrated tuner front end with high Q filters within a single package. High voltage varactors with a large tuning range can be used for variable capacitors. The integration of the tuner into a SIP allows the tuner design to be optimized for cost and performance while keeping the critical RF layout requirements within the tuner. A configurable tuner front end enables modes for low noise, high linearity, good input return loss (S11) across the entire RF band, and applying a test tone in the calibration mode. The switchable mode enables the tuner to be effective during weak terrestrial reception, strong terrestrial reception, and connection to a cable plant.

Also provided are shunts at each pin to discharge ESD build up. The shunts utilize a gate boosting structure to provide sufficient small signal RF performance, and minimal parasitic loading.

A tuning method and a tuning apparatus for tuning a filter are disclosed. The tuning method includes: configuring the filter as a VCO; utilizing the VCO to generate an oscillation signal according to a driving signal; comparing a frequency of the oscillation signal with a reference frequency to generate a comparison result; converting the comparison result into the driving signal in order to establish a feedback mechanism. Therefore, the inner components such as the gm and capacitance inside the VCO are completely tuned when the VCO generates an oscillation signal having a wanted frequency. Since the VCO is inside the filter and the components of the filter and the VCO are similar, the driving signal can be utilized to make the filter operate in a desired center frequency under a well-designed relationship between the frequency of the oscillation signal and the center frequency.
