The composite broadly comprises a substrate having a surface and at least one layer of a BN/Si3N4 coating on the substrate surface. The coating preferably is formed by alternative layers of a BN material and a Si3N4 material. The substrate may be a cloth material with fibers, such as SiC fibers, woven therein.

A composition for increasing the resistance of polyamide fibers or polyester fibers to oxidizing agents comprising an organosiloxane modified with amino groups, melamine formaldehyde resin, a catalyst for complexing the melamine formaldehyde resin and water. The composition is used by applying it to the fibers so the fibers absorb the composition, and then drying and curing the composition on the fibers. The composition is employed to treat a polyester or polyamide felt employed to convey wood pulp which is to be bleached, prior to paper making operations, treatment of the felt with the composition significantly lengthens the useful life of the felt, exposed to bleaching chemicals.

Carbon-carbon composites consisting of graphite fibers reinforcing a carbon matrix are protected from oxidation by a B.sub.2 O.sub.3 glass coating which includes a refractory oxide to stabilize the viscosity of the glass. Precursors of B.sub.2 O.sub.3 and the refractory oxide are dispersed into a resin, the resin is used to impregnate fibrous graphite or fibrous graphitizable material, the sheets are laid up as plies and the laid-up plies are carbonized and graphitized using heat structure. The composite structure is then coated with an additional mix of resin and precursors and the coated structure is heated to carbonize the resin and leave a seal coat on the structure. Then an outer shell of a refractory material is deposited on the structure.
