摘要: In photodynamic diagnosis and photodynamic therapy, the oscillating wavelength of laser light from a light source is fitted to a plurality of different kinds of photosensitizers and exciting conditions thereof. Moreover, diagnosis and treatment are achieved using a single light source. Concurrent diagnosis during treatment is realized as well. A semiconductor laser generates laser light having an oscillating wavelength which is variable and a full width at half maximum which is narrow. A light transmission line guides an irradiated laser light the vicinity of a focus, an image transmission line observes the focus and the periphery thereof, a fluorescence light extracting device extracts only the fluorescence light emitted from a photosensitizer excited by the irradiated laser light, an image-pick-up/analyzing device picks up and analyzes an image of the extracted fluorescence light and an image display device displays the analyzing result.

摘要: A multitasking optical fiber probe for collecting dosimeter information from more than one position in a sample. The basic principle of the present invention involves using one or more different sensor zones along the length of the fiber each with a different photoactive constituent having a sufficiently unique emission spectra (spectral or temporal) to enable deconvolution of the emission spectra by the computer and therefore correlation of the detected parameter with the position of the sensor zone along the length of the optical fiber. In the broadest form of the invention the probe is embodied by only one sensor zone located at some point along the length of the fiber spaced away from the end face of the fiber. Probes are provided in which multiple sensor zones are disposed along the length of the fiber and photoactive constituents with sufficiently unique emission spectra (intensity and/or spectral shape which convey the optical information) are used in the different sensor zones so that the different spectra can be deconvoluted so that the contributions from the various etch zones can be distinguished. More than one different photoactive constituent could be incorporated into a single sensor zone for measuring several factors in the vicinity of the sensor zone. In photodynamic therapy applications the probe is isotropic in response and can be employed for all light (300 to 900nm) based medical diagnostics and therapeutics. As an extension the probe can include photosensitiser and molecular oxygen concentrations dosimetry to be used for photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment monitoring, dosimetry and planning utilizing a mathematical model describing tissue response to PDT.

摘要: An instrument is provided for applying light, particularly laser light, to the human or animal body. A tubular shaft is provided into which a flexible light waveguide may be inserted, where a light-emitting end of the waveguide comes to rest at a distal end portion of the tubular shaft. The distal end portion of the tubular shaft is pivotally connected with the remaining portion of the tubular shaft, so that the distal end portion may be pivoted away from the longitudinal axis of the tubular shaft. Manipulating devices are provided at the proximal end of the tubular shaft for pivoting the distal end portion. The manipulating devices include at least one movable operating element, which is directly connected to the distal end portion by means of an actuator element.

摘要: An optical bench for processing laser light in a laser system, including an optical bench housing, a beam dump mounted to the optical bench housing so as to be in optical communication therewith, steering optics mounted within the optical bench housing for directing the laser light in a path from a laser light input to an output, and a mechanism for causing the laser light to deviate from the path and be directed into the beam dump upon recognition of a specified condition in the laser system, wherein the laser light is thermally isolated from the steering optics. The mechanism can either cause at least one optically reflective element to be inserted into the path, cause at least one optical element of the steering optics to have a change in position with respect to the path, and/or causes at least one optical element of the steering optics to be removed from the path.

摘要: A catheter device suitable for shrinking chordae tendineae of the human heart is provided having an energy conduit and a positioning device that facilitates the delivery of thermal energy, including coherent (laser) or non-coherent light, RF, microwave or ultrasound energy, to a predetermined region of the chordae tendineae or other collagen-containing tissue, such as the female urethra or the esophagus near the sphincter. The device comprises a tubular catheter containing an energy conduit, such as a fiber optic cable, adapted for delivering thermal energy to the tissue. The tubular catheter also contain a stabilizing device, disposed at its distal end, such as an asymmetrically shaped balloon or a retractable flexible metal hook. With the distal end of the catheter device positioned within a human heart, application of thermal energy to the chordae tendineae results in a shrinkage of the chordae, providing a treatment for primary mitral valve regurgitation.

摘要: A system and method is disclosed for improved treatment of oral tissues using 980 nm laser radiation and a handpiece with means for concurrently delivering the laser radiation and a liquid/gas spray onto the treatment area to improve the treatment effects. Unwanted heating and carbonization of surrounding tissues is reduced. The liquid/gas spray may be mixed inside the handpiece or in a separate device. The combination of cooling sprays with radiation wavelengths having high absorption in water has previously been avoided due to the thought that energy absorption by the cooling fluid would render the energy delivered to the tissue uncontrollable and of minimal benefit. Preferably, pulsed laser light provides a localized energy deposition and heating to avoid unwanted heating of underlying tissue. The liquid spray flushes away tissue debris in addition to cooling the treated tissue.

A fiberoptic cable is disposed within the catheter and having a distal end proximate to the distal end of the catheter and a proximal end for external coupling of laser light energy. A laser-light-to-mechanical-power converter is connected to receive light from the distal end of the fiber optic cable and may include a photo-voltaic cell and an electromechanical motor or a heat-sensitive photo-thermal material. An electronic sensor is connected to receive electrical power from said distal end of the fiberoptic cable and is connected to provide signal information about a particular physical environment and communicated externally through the fiberoptic cable to the proximal end thereof. A mechanical sensor is attached to the distal end of the fiberoptic cable and connected to provide light signal information about a particular physical environment and communicated externally through the fiberoptic cable.

摘要: A handpiece for projecting laser radiation from a solid-state laser via an articulated arm to biological tissue being treated is disclosed. An optical system in the handpiece provides that the laser radiation is projected in a spot of selectively variable size at a fixed distance from the handpiece. The projected spot can be defined as an image of a characteristic invariant cross-section of the laser beam delivered to the handpiece which has about the same width at a wide range of M2 values of the laser beam. This provides that at any mechanically selected size, the size of the projected spot remains substantially constant over the range of M2 values between about 1 and 15. In one example the handpiece projects 2.94 &mgr;m radiation in a range of spot sizes between about 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm. Spot size remains substantially constant over a range of M2 values between about 1 and 15.
