The catalyst has a proportion of its cobalt in reducible form, with this proportion being expressible as &OHgr; mass %, based on the total pre-reduction catalyst mass. The catalyst also has, when freshly reduced, a mono-modal Gaussian metallic cobalt crystallite size distribution, a metallic cobalt surface area, in m2 per gram of catalyst, of from 0.14 &OHgr; to 1.03 &OHgr;, and a catalyst geometry that ensures a stabilized Fischer-Tropsch synthesis effectiveness factor of 0.9 or greater.

When a polybasic acid salt containing at least one species selected from the group consisting of an alkaline earth metal, a transition metal, and Al is caused to be present on the surfaces of titanium dioxide fine particles, there are obtained photocatalytic particles and powder exhibiting sufficent photocatalytic properties when irradiated with light from a light source of low quantity of light. By use of the photo-functional particles and powder, an organic polymer composition, a slurry, a coating agent, and a product having a surface exhibiting photocatalytic property and hydrophilicity are obtained.

High melt index polyolefins have been obtained with chromium silica catalysts under conventional polymerization conditions without the use of titanium or other additives. The useful chromium silica catalysts have a pore volume in the range of 1.9-2.9 cc/g and a narrow pore size distribution. The silica is a silica gel preferably obtained from a low solids, rapid gelation process.

A nickel/rhenium catalyst composition for the reductive amination of lower aliphatic alkane derivatives is described. The catalyst includes from about 2 to about 75 weight percent nickel and has a nickel to rhenium weight percent ratio of from about 1:1 to about 200:1. The nickel and rhenium are supported on an alumina-silica support which contains from about 5 to about 65 weight percent silica and has a BET surface area of from about 30 to about 450 m2/g. A process for the reductive amination of lower aliphatic alkane derivatives using such a catalyst composition is also provided.
