The soil and stain repellency of extruded filaments of a synthetic resin can be improved by incorporating in the resin a small amount, about 1 percent, of an amphipathic compound having from one to four fluoroalkyl groups pendent from an organic radical. The repellency is provided by the fluoroalkyl groups, which tend to be concentrated at the surface of the fiber.

A process for preparing oil-extended rubbery polymers of at least one mono-olefin comprises incorporating at least 0.5 weight per cent of water, based on the polymer, in said polymer and blending oil into the water-containing polymer. The polymer may be prepared by polymerizing at least one olefin containing up to 7 carbon atoms, optionally with up to 20 mol. per cent of polyunsaturated monomer, such as butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, 2-methylene norbornene, dicyclopentadiene, hexadiene-1,4 and cyclo-octadiene-1,5, in a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon medium in the presence of a catalyst comprising a transition metal compound and a metal, hydride or organometallic compound of a Group I to IV metal, and if desired in the presence of hydrogen, oxygen, water or alcohol. The oil may be aromatic, paraffinic or naphthenic, and conventional additives, e.g. zinc oxide, stearic acid, stabilizers, accelerators, tackifiers, dyes, carbon black, silica, calcium silicate, chalk and kaolin, may be added simultaneously or in admixture with the oil. Oil extended unsaturated polymers may be vulcanized with sulphur and peroxides, and may be used to make tyres, conveyer belts and floor tiles. Examples describe the blending of naphthenic oils with (1) an ethylene/propylene copolymer and (2) an ethylene/propylene/dicyclopentadiene copolymer.
