    摘要: An active gain region sandwiched between a 100% reflective bottom. Bragg mirror and an intermediate partially reflecting Bragg mirror is formed on a lower surface of a supporting substrate, to thereby provide the first (“active”) resonator cavity of a high power coupled cavity surface emitting laser device. The bottom mirror is preferably in direct thermal contact with an external heat sink for maximum heat removal effectiveness. The reflectivity of the intermediate mirror is kept low enough so that laser oscillation within the active gain region will not occur. The substrate is entirely outside the first active resonator cavity to a level sufficient to cause lasing. The substrate is entirely outside the active cavity but is contained within a second (“passive”) resonator cavity defined by the intermediate mirror and a partially reflecting output mirror, where it is subjected to only a fraction of the light intensity that is circulating in the gain region. The active gain region is preferably electrically excited, with a circular bottom electrode formed by an oxide current aperture between the bottom mirror and the heat sink, and with an annular top electrode formed on an upper surface of the substrate.

    摘要: A three-dimensional photonic crystal add-drop filter apparatus has a three-dimensional photonic crystal, a first waveguide for transmitting light having a frequency within a bandgap of the three-dimensional photonic crystal, and a second waveguide. A resonant cavity couples the light in the first waveguide to the second waveguide for extracting at least one wavelength of the light transmitted in the first waveguide and redirecting the extracted light to the second waveguide. The apparatus has a full three-dimensional bandgap and thus does not require total internal reflection to confine the light as is required in a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab. The waveguides can be made single mode such that only one polarization is allowed to propagate thus avoiding mixing of the two polarizations.

    摘要: An optical pulse train generator is composed of first and second optical resonators and an optical pulse generator. The first optical resonator has therein a first optical path of a first optical path length. The second optical resonator is inserted into the first optical path. The second optical resonator has therein a second optical path of a second optical path length substantially equal to 1/m of the second optical path length, m being a natural number. The optical pulse generator provides the first optical resonator with a first optical pulse train including a component of a first repetition rate tuned corresponding to the first optical path length. The provision of the first optical pulses allows a second optical pulse isolator to be generated in the first optical resonator. The first optical resonator extracts a portion of the second optical pulse train to output an output optical pulse train.

    摘要: A supported distributed Bragg reflector or superlattice structure formed from a substrate, a nucleation layer deposited on the substrate, and an interlayer deposited on the nucleation layer, followed by deposition of (Al,Ga,B)N layers or multiple pairs of (Al,Ga,B)N/(Al,Ga,B)N layers, where the interlayer is a material selected from AlN, AlxGa1-xN, and AlBN with a thickness of approximately 20 to 1000 angstroms. The interlayer functions to reduce or eliminate the initial tensile growth stress, thereby reducing cracking in the structure. Multiple interlayers utilized in an AlGaN/GaN DBR structure can eliminate cracking and produce a structure with a reflectivity value greater than 0.99.

    摘要: A laser source with an optical resonator includes a laser gain medium with a low reflective first facet emitting a laser beam within the optical resonator. A wavelength dependent mirror receives the laser beam and reflects back a wavelength separated laser beam. A beam splitter divides the wavelength separated laser beam into a feedback beam directed toward the laser gain medium and a first output beam to be coupled out of the optical resonator. As a first improvement, the laser gain medium includes a second facet which is partly reflective, so that the second facet emits a second output beam of the laser source. As a second improvement, the laser source further includes a mirror arranged in a way that a beam diffracted by the wavelength dependent mirror is reflected back and again diffracted by the wavelength dependent mirror, so that the twice diffracted beam provides the wavelength separated laser beam.

    摘要: The invention relates to the stabilization of semiconductor laser diode sources as they are extensively used in the field of optical communication. Such lasers are mostly employed as so-called pump laser sources for fiber amplifiers, e.g. Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, and are designed to provide a narrow-bandwidth optical radiation with a stable power output in a given frequency band. To improve the stability of such laser sources compared to prior art designs, a plurality of “external” cavities is provided. In the commonly employed optical fibers for conducting the laser beam, these cavities may be formed by a plurality of appropriately designed Bragg gratings. However, the cavities may as well be formed by other means reflecting a given amount of the energy back to the laser in a desired frequency band, thus effecting the stabilization of the laser's intensity and frequency.

    摘要: A dual cavity multifunction laser comprising a diode-pumped, contact cooled, slab laser head that supports two different length unstable resonators. The laser produces short ( 15 ns), higher energy 1 &mgr;m pulses from the same laser system at different repetition rates, if desired. The output from each resonator can be separately optimized for different operating modes such as target designation and target profiling. The unstable resonators use independently optimized super Gaussian output couplers to generate high quality beams for each of the high and low pulse energy modes. The resonators also share a common bounce path to minimize intracavity losses and thermally induced birefringence for both resonators.

    摘要: A single mode high power vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) using photonic crystals. A photonic crystal is included in at least one mirror layer of a VCSEL. The reflectivity of the photonic crystal is dependent on the wavelength and incident angle of the photons. The photonic crystal can be formed such that the VCSEL lases at a single mode. Because a single mode is generated, the aperture of the VCSEL can be enlarged to increase the power that is generated by the VCSEL for that mode. The photonic crystal can be used with/without DBR layers. The photonic crystal, in one example, forms an external cavity.
