摘要: The present invention is directed to a telecommunications system and access panel for providing direct metallic access to a telecommunications carrier's signal pairs by a competitor while providing isolation between the telecommunications POTS service and the competitor's digital line service. The isolation is provided by placing DC blocking capacitors in the access panel. In another embodiment, direct metallic access is achieved by placing the access panel as an intermediate distribution frame member.

摘要: A system for transparently transporting m synchronous data streams as an aggregate data stream on a single channel of a Wave Division Multiplexed (WDM) optical link without pointer processing uses m unique encoding schemes to enable recovery of the respective m data streams from the aggregate data stream. The encoding schemes are preferably self-inverting. The respective m data streams are parsed into data units and encoded. The data units are then interleaved to form the aggregate data stream. Recovery is accomplished using a reverse process.

摘要: A system and method for transporting data packets in a ring network includes a plurality of network nodes having a protection switching agent and at least one fast downstream path circuit that provides a low-latency packet cut-through function for forwarding packets from an upstream node to a downstream node. The network nodes include three interfaces, two interfaces for coupling the network node to other network nodes in the ring network, and a third interface for coupling the network node to a local node. A plurality of virtual paths are provided between a data packet gateway, such as an Internet gateway, and the local nodes that are coupled to the network nodes of the ring network. A virtual channel identifier is embedded within data packets transported on the network so that the protection switching agent in each network node can determine whether to route received data packets to the local node, or to the low-latency cut-through downstream path circuit.

摘要: A multi-channel coding and multiplexer apparatus comprises a number of coders, buffers and a multiplexer. For each channel, a coder receives an input signal and provides coded data to a corresponding buffer. A surplus bandwidth is determined in accordance with the amount of coded data provided by the coders. The multiplexer distributes this surplus bandwidth to one, or more, channels by adjusting the rate at which the coded data is read from the corresponding buffer.

摘要: A network arrangement for transporting service (Servco) traffic between terminals via an asynchronous path comprises a servco access layer incorporating multimedia gateways for access by said terminals, an asynchronous network layer, a service layer incorporating adaptation layer switches each coupled to the network layer, and a transport layer providing a connection medium between the adaptation layer switches. The Servco traffic is carried in ATM minicells over the network layer. Delineation of the minicells is effected by searching the received ATM stream for a valid code word indicating the start of a minicell, and, for that minicell and subsequent minicells, determining length information so as to determine the start of each next minicell.

摘要: Transport packet demultiplexing and distribution, is enhanced in a digital transport demultiplexing system that inputs a stream of digital multimedia transport packets. According to an example embodiment, each of the transport packets includes a packet identifier (PID) to identify the digital program or elementary stream to which it corresponds. Local packet information is generated for each of the transport packets, which is used in identifying and distributing the transport packets. A local header is created that includes the generated local packet information, and the local header is linked to its corresponding transport packet to create a modified transport packet. In this manner, each of the modified transport packets represents a self-contained digital transport packet having local distribution information contained therein.

摘要: Multiple gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and Fiber Channel (FC) signals are multiplexed and transported on a wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) communications link using synchronous optical network (SONET) signaling. A transmitter decodes the 8b/10b encoded GbE/FC signals to reduce their respective signaling rates to no greater than the payload data rate of an OC-48 signal used on the link. The decoded signal are packetized into fixed-size packets in order to append a stream identifier used for de-multiplexing at the receive end. The packetized streams are multiplexed together and formatted into the OC-48 signal, which is transmitted over the communications link. A receiver de-multiplexes the received signal to obtain the packet streams, converts the packet streams to the corresponding decoded signals, and re-encodes each signal to re-create the original GbE/FC signals. A pair of interfaces can be arranged to provide independent adding or dropping of the GbE/FC signals that share the same wavelength.

摘要: A system for remultiplexing packets that are provided at variable rates in digital bitstreams using a delay buffer and rate estimation. A bitstream with specific packet types provided at different rates is extracted from a multiplex and combined with other fixed or variable rate bit streams in such a way that timing delivery constraints on the extracted variable rate bitstream are followed. The extracted bitstream is smoothed to reduce variations in the data rate. The smoothed bitstream is then processed in first and second parallel paths. In the first path, selected packets are discarded to obtain a retained data stream. The data rate of the retained data stream is estimated and provided to a control. In the second path, the smoothed bitstream is delayed according to at least the processing time of the rate estimator in the first path, then the selected packets are discarded to obtain a delayed, retained data stream. The retained data stream in the second path is then remultiplexed with other data streams at a rate near the estimated data rate. For example, the invention is suitable for use at a cable television headend which grooms and remultiplexes digital transport streams that comply with the MPEG-2 standard.
