Abstract:
A technique facilitates construction of a wire-wrapped screen. A wrapping machine is operated with a sensor, e.g. a camera, positioned adjacent the wrapping machine while wire is wrapped to create the wire-wrapped screen. The sensor is used to obtain data on at least one parameter of the wire-wrapped screen during creation of the wire-wrapped screen. Data is provided to a controller in communication with the wrapping machine to improve the quality of the wire-wrapped screen. For example, data from the images obtained via the camera may be provided to the controller which is configured to determine slot width as the wire is wrapped. The controller is then able to provide feedback in real time to the wrapping machine so as to adjust the wrapping machine for maintaining a desired slot width.
Abstract:
A method and an installation for constructing a layer (12) of armor strips around a tubular core (10) of a flexible pipe. The installation has a support wheel (14) of a plurality of armor strips (32, 34) having, respectively, two opposite faces (44, 46) and a plurality of pairs of guide members (20, 22). The pairs of guide members include upstream guide members (52, 54) and downstream guide members (56, 58) which sets of guide members extend along axes that are angularly offset from one another. The support wheel (14) has devices (78, 92) for adjusting the downstream guide members (56, 58) into a position such that the two opposite faces (44, 46) of the armor strip entering and leaving the downstream guide members (56, 58) are substantially perpendicular to the plane of flexing (Pf) defined by the entering and leaving armor strip.
Abstract:
A tool for installing a metal locking tie is disclosed. The tool includes a tension mechanism and a ball set and cut-off mechanism. The tension mechanism tensions the metal locking tie wrapped around a bundle. The ball set and cut-off mechanism includes a guide block and a shear block that engages the guide block. Once the tool tensions the metal locking tie, a ball set and cut-off handle is manually activated to push the guide block and the shear block forward in the tool thereby setting a ball in a metal locking tie head and shearing a portion of the tensioned metal locking tie.
Abstract:
An apparatus for winding a heating wire on a core for forming the inner periphery of an electric melt-bonding joint which comprises a core in a generally cylindrical shape which is capable of rotating around its axial center, the core being relatively moved in the axial direction with respect to a heating wire, an engaging piece mounted on the core, which has a holding portion for holding a heating wire, and a fixing means to fix a terminal pin to the leading end of the heating wire. The engaging piece has a holding portion for holding the terminal pin, whereby the heating wire is wound on an outer peripheral portion of the core by rotating the core.
Abstract:
A method of producing a circular metal article reinforced by fibres in selected parts of its cross-section is described in which a metal blank of the article is formed and provided with at least one annular groove opening in the axial direction, preforms of reinforcing fibre and filler metal are placed in the groove which is then closed by a metal plug, and the assembly is isothermally forged to produce the article in a single forging step which serves to compress the preforms, weld the assembly together, and shape the article. Such articles may be used for machining high performance rotors for turbojet engines. Apparatus for use in the method is also described.
Abstract:
The invention discloses a wire wrapped composite spiral hose, having a plurality of layers of fabric wrapped around a preformed convolute hose and held in place by a continuous wire spaced within the convolutions. A method and device for preparing the hose is disclosed using parallel elongate mandrels which are synchronized to rotate and apply the wire spaced in the convolutions.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method are provided for forming elongated solid shapes from solid flowable materials such as metal powders, metal shot, fragments or segments of metal in a weldable condition by continuously feeding same to die means which includes two or more power rotated rolls or rollers between which the flowable material is fed and compressed to define its shape. In one form the flowable material or particles may be cold pressured welded into the shape defined by the surfaces of the rolls and their spacing. In another form, heat may be generated within or transferred to the material between the rolls by induction or resistence heating means disposed within or adjacent to the rolls, wherein the heat and the high pressure applied to the material by the rolls serves to fuse or weld the material fed therebetween into a solid porous or non-porous mass as it is fed through the rolls. Heat generated within the compressed material by the compressive force of the rolls thereon may also serve to fuse the material into a solid porous or non-porous mass.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for longitudinally reinforcing continuously generated, resin-impregnated fiber pipe includes depositing longitudinal reinforcing fiber elements directly onto the surface of the pipe into the nip formed between the surface of the pipe being generated and fiber elements being wound circumferentially onto the pipe. Rollers contacting the pipe at the nip guide the longitudinal deposition of fiber elements supplied from a swinging supply tube.
Abstract:
A method and device for producing finned heat transfer tubing of oval cross section by winding one or more continuous metal strips around the tubing in the form of spiral fins, the contact edge of the metal strip being shaped prior to winding to present a hook-shaped ledge with an acute enclosed angle, and the neutral axis for on-edge bending being shifted to the vicinity of the contact edge by applying to the strip a tensile stress and to its upper half additional transverse compression stress, using a stretch roller and a cooperating winding guide. A lathe-like machine semi-automatically winds two metal strips onto successive lengths of oval tubing, using a carriage with two pivotable winding arms and two strip reels.
Abstract:
Apparatus for winding at least one strip of an elongate product, such as a wire or ribbon, on to a cylindrical body from a spool of the product comprising means for producing relative rotation of the spool around the cylindrical body, a main drive unit for driving the rotation producing apparatus and connected to the axle of the spool through a differential driven by a secondary drive unit for braking the spool to tension said product. The secondary drive unit may be controlled by the output of a tension sensing mechanism sensing the tension of the product.
